Yes, keyboard type would help for sure. And I have never heard of a midi to USB connector before. Unless you are talking about a USB type keyboard which there are several of these types of units out there. Like dB or my sons Radium 49 which connect directly via USB. But you do need to install drivers for it to function.

I'm not a MIDI person, but I'm tryin' to be. In my research, I have not come across and older keyboards - like the casio you describe - where you can just plug it into a USB port and have it work. I believe that you need some sort MIDI interface between the keyboard and your computer. I also believe that these come in either the USB variety, or your sound card might have a MIDI/joystick port on it. In the latter case, all you would need is a cable to run from the MIDI port on your sound card to your keyboard. I think that most MIDI recording software would recognize your keyboard at that point.

There are a lot of way smarter people around here that will either confirm or correct my beliefs!

Go to HRC's Studio Equipment section to read about your various choices:

I've never heard of a MIDI 5-pin DIN to USB cable before... not sure it's possible without some extra hardware or software controlling the signal routing. If you can provide a link or photo of the cable you bought it would be cool to see, not to mention benifical to you so we can help you out.

oh ya it actually does plug into my joystick port, it just didnt work, so i bought a usb converter for the end, but I'm still having problems getting it to work in my joystick port? I think i may need to install a driver or something??

the USB converter shouldn't work for MIDI, yes for Joysticks since they are plug-n-play but not for MIDI. You should connect the MIDI ends to your keyboard and the other back into your soundcard. My guess for why it didn't work is either improper connection (should be 'out' to 'in' and 'in' to 'out') or you need to reconfigure the MIDI settings on your soundcard/software.

Hey el musico...

We had that problem also when first connecting a USB/MIDI cable from the electric piano to the sound card...but once we put the cable into the 'out' slot(d'oh)...it was all on.

The cable we bought had the installation CD with it.

Hope that helps...

Cheers,
