Hi Duane,

"I am not great with genres" - hehe, that line couldve been written by me :)

I like the vibe in your song SKY LOW a lot. For me, the vocals are a little too hidden and covered up by the synths. I think both they and the snare could use a little EQ to bring out the mids a bit more.... they will then cut through much better without you having to touch the volume knob on those tracks. I've often read that the sign of a good and "proper" mix (i shouldnt really use that term, as it suggest there are rulez to this thang called mewsack!) is that if you turn the volume slowly down, all the way, the last things you can hear are the snare and vocals... doing this on your mix reveals that synth bit is the loudest. YOu might wanna correct that, you might not... i'd like to hear the lyrics a bit clearer though.

I also picture some harmonies in that song, to add some variation and a touch of sparkle further down the line.

Serenade is also very good considering it's 3 years old, maybe its the harmonies that make it sound more "complete" (for want of a better word). I like the panning on this one, it sounds nice and full. That shift in mood halfway through is a really nice touch. Wasnt expecting that.

Hope these comments are helpful... good songs, and thanks for posting them!

I'm listening to it on my laptop which has little high pitch speakers but I have come customed too. I will give another listen later on at home with my monitors.

I like the sound. I love the low key that has a sent of 80 sound effects. I hope you won't get offended by the 80's comments, but I like it! Your voice is great, personally I would like to see that brought out more. What effect do you use on your vocals? I like how crisp they are. I like the snare personally, I always loved snares that are high end cutting. I also like mid range sounding snares if the song requires it to make it sound full. Then again, I'm on my high pitch laptop speakers, I might say different in my monitors.

Overall, I like them!! Keeps me listening, so I like it!

Thanks for the welcomes and the positive comments!!!

neuaddsibly, I agree with you about the voice being too low. I did eq it and try a second mix, but I am not uploading it as yet cuz I want to do the vocals better on at least a mic! (I used a headphone element the first time as my mic cable broke) The level was so low after recording the voice with the headphone element that I had to boost it about 13db, then gate it for all the hiss in between then compress it, eq it added a delay and I think a little reverb.

I am going by a friend of mine who at least has a sound card and an SM58. I will then see if I can add some harmonies and see what happens from there.

Thanks again for the replies, encouragement, and suggestions!!

Oh I almost forgot.

I am a part of/helping another group with their songs. I cant get on to soundclick at work so I will post the site later, but if you go to soundclick and do a search for 2reel, you should find it. Its one song for now, but I think it sounds good. I helped with the mixing and some of the backing vocals.

Thanks

In that case, the vocal sounds pretty darn good considering! Singing it through the sm 58 will of course make it 200% better though, so go for it :)

"(PS what do you think of Audiolust for a group name or a stage name for me??)"

To be honest, the images it conjures up in my mind are not the images of a guy living where you do, nor doing the music you do. To me, it makes me think of techno music for some reason. Kinda technical, almost sounds more like an audio product name than a project name. But then who am i to talk LOL :)
I kinda like Rufkut though, have to say :)

I also like rufkut, but I think that that name maybe already taken.

I have come up with some other names, but I will do that in a different forumm!!

OH. I am not from Trinidad and Tobago by the way, I am from St. Vincent and the Grenadines. A little chain of Islands about 150 mile north of Trinida and Tobago. Soundclick did not have it in their list of countries, so I substituted Trinidad.

Hey, I'm listening on lofi, so I may not be hearing these as they are intended, but I will agree with neuaddsibly that the vocals could come out more in sky low. But if you are actually recording with a headphone, good job! I think what is happening is that your guitar thing and your vocals are competing for eq space, leading for your vocals to be covered a bit, cuz I hear them much more clear when that guitar drops out. Bass hits kind of loud at time and could probably stand to be eqed down. With all that being said, I like this song, there are a lot of good ideas here, and I like your singing.

Serenade is a cool song as well. I like the drums on this one for sure. But I'd say the vocals are a little bit overbearing in the mix on this one, but I like the way the takes are layered over each other. Good job.

Thanks coolo, and thanks to all suggestions.

I am back on the main island for St. Vincent & the grenadines, so I should be doing to my friend's house maybe even tonight to at least talk about redoing the vocals for Sky Low.

Even then I will redo them another time as I have an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 and an M-Audio Audio Buddy on the way. In the near future, I hope to order a mic bundle from 8th Street which gives you a Studio project B1, with cable, mic stand, shock mount and pop filter for $150. So hopefully, I will get some really sweet vocals then!!

One thing I will ask you guys about in the near future is eq-ing tracks so that they fit better in the mix. I did this song soo fast, that I forgot to do so, but some pointers as to eq-ing the bass, the drumsand everything else would be very helpful and I rhink might bring out the overall mix better.

I also think I need to consider contributing here so I could collaborate with some of you guys. You guys are really great!!

audiolust, I just had a minute to give a quick listen. I like them both, the second does your voice more justice though. You expersiveness is very good. And for recording with a cheap setup the sound is not all bad.

The only critique I would have is the kick and the bass in the begining of the second song distort just a bit. I would probly blame the card for that. Otherwise the vocals really sound fantastic.

Hey noize2u,

I think that effect in the first part of the second song,Serenade for the Soul, was on purpose. I distorted it and lo-fi-ed(?) it with Izotope Vinyl, cuz I wanted there to be a sort of impact change into the 'first verse'.

I am saying that to defend my bad mixing :-) (just kidding)

Both songs are very nice, really well done, especially considering the equipment used.

I agree the vocals could come up a bit in Sky, that being the only thing that really needs some attention. Your vocals themselves are excellent, you have a great voice.

Just to add another song to the mix. I didnt record it. But I did sing some backing vocals and did the mixing, processing, and 'mastering'( I know I don't have the skills of an ME)using an Audigy sound card and CEP.

Tell me what you think.

Oh I almost forgot. The name of the group is 2Reel and the style of the music is R&B/Soul.

The Lead singer is Desmond Dennie, I do the backing vocals and helped 'produce' the track along with Sheldon

I hope that you like this one.

That is pretty nice. Very smooth and easy to listen to. Vocals sit well in the mix, as does everything else.
