anyone have a wireless network set up in thier home or apartment? wanna get ol' dad the ability to hook into the home cable connection with his laptop. i bet he'd also like to be able to use wireless hotspots, but i don't know what you need to buy to take advantage of those. is there a product that does both at once? if not, i guess he just needs a cheap (but good) wireless router for home use...

I have set up wireless networks in two neighbors houses and they were pretty easy, one has a d-link and the other linksys, I prefer the d-link myself, seems to get better range.

D-link are superb. Linksys is cisco=hard to configure sometimes for the normal user.

I'm running a Linksys wirelss network in my house with no problems. Set up was idiot proof (essential in my case...) It even works with my iBook's airport card!

yeah it's all supposed to be universal, as long as your router and adapter (card in computer) are within one of two categories:

802.11a
or
802.11b/802.11g

forty, i'd say get 802.11b since it's cost-effective and will be fast enough for your dad. but yes, he will need both a router and a wireless device for his computer. pay close attention to the instructions, and be sure to turn on encryption (the password feature) so that people can't just come park in front of the house and sign on with their laptops.

thanks guys. sounds like you're sayin' the adapter, if it's one of those 802.x models, is what yaps with the routers inside coffee shops and so forth. therefore, we'll get a router/adapter package for the home and count on the card working out at hotspots.

thanx!

I run a D-Link system with a range extender to a garden shed...where my studio resides :) (about 60 yards) and with SP2 for XP it's been working well... prior it was a load of crap :) and would drop when ever the humidity changed...where I would then have to go back to the house to reboot the router...

Hey Forty,

yep, need two things for a wireless connection:

A. Wireless/Hybrid router
B. Wireless ethernet card

Depending on if you are running a laptop or desktop the wireless ethernet card will be different for the different systems. Setting up the network is easy once you have everything. Just remember to ask your cable provider if you are set up on a DHCP connection or a Static IP addy first before your setup though and it will make life easier. If you have any questions about setup, please feel free to e-mail me man. I work for Comcast and deal with that stuff every day. :) peace
