Hi,

I`d like to make a record of my music and I would like to have 5.1 suround sound. I mean each instrument in each speaker for example, not just divided stereo sound to front and rear speakers.
Does anybody know how to do it? Do I need some special software? Or is there some plugin which can make this?

Thanks for help.
Jiri

program, hardware, either or...
lots of programs now have 5.1 mixing capabilities, you just have to set it up that way, like using a 5.1 master, and sending your I/O to that master should do it. and if you really want something cool, a 5.1 input, five mikes going to one I/O, yeah, beauty... but that is for us freaks who like to play with things too much. If you want to become one of us... we must touch toungues....

to tell you the truth, i am the type that has to be sitting in front of the program to be able to tell you exactly how to do it, not one of those memorize steps kinda guys with everything, just most things, all pictures in this brain baby!

First, you need software that can mix in 5.1. Many can now, here are the common ones:

Sony Vegas: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Steinberg Cubase: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Steinerg Nuendo: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Sonar 4 Producer: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Then, you need a sound card that has digital outputs capable of surround. Today, most any S/PDIF can do it, though some still don't so be aware, and optical outs always can. I use the ESI Juli@ myself, esi-pro.com/viewProduct.php?pid=43&page=1.

And finally, you then need a decoder, a sub woofer and 5 matched speakers. to take the digital signal, devie it up into 6 discreet channels and send it to your speakers. For the sake of saving money and having fun, a typical home recieiver and speakers can do this, that is what I am using now. But when ya get serious about it a better setup would be necessary, I know am expecting to get a better amplification and speaker system down the road.

hybridtoad:

Ok, thank you. I`d like to make something like qudrophonic record, that means I`d like to have something like four independable channels. I didn`t know which software can make it, because I`m returning to this after couple of years. What I don`t want to, is to have just stereo signal playing from all speakers, but to have four speakers making different sound.

dB Masters:
I`ll check those programs. I know about them but I didn`t try their latest versions. When I was doing this last time there was just the posibility of having surround sound in the way I
described. Stereo signal in four speakers.. I want four signals in four speakers.
I`ll chek it out .
Thank you guys.

what dB said, I run Nuendo and Sony Vegas, i also am fluent in ProTools, so I do not really think that I have had the oppurtunity to have a 5.1-less system... But if you get one of the programs he mentioned and have the individual channels that is easy, (dB knows his stuff, listen to him, not me in most cases, I just run the programs and play around most of the tme, although I get myself into trouble with my mouth) and do it, in Nuendo you have the chance when starting a new mix to have it automatically set up a 5.1 mix. If you choose an "empty" project all you have to do is right click your master and choose to change it to a 5.1 master. He is righton the sound ard though, I bought a 5.1 mixing speaker system to start off with so I forgot about all the other stuff cause I am just used to having it all there for me.

the other thing is that if you get one of the programs... read the manual!!! that is one of the things that I found works best for me. That way it explains in detail how to do it.

BTW dB, can i just say that I have tons of respect for you man, tons. YOU the Man!
