Roond aboot £100 for either/or - I dunno what else I would fancy. I have the vamp etc so Im pretty covered there (got that last Xmas funnily enuff).... I just dunno!

I'm with you on the Les Paul. Cherry burst, just like my first guitar idol, Jimmy Page.

I'm really interested in getting more heavily into the PC side of recording. My old piece of crap homebuilt doesn't really have what it takes. Maybe Santa will leave a shiny new Dell under my tree. Dude!

Aye...I spied a double neck Epiphone Les Paul (replica of Jimmy's Gibson original) red...

Cool as hell...cost....£750!!! Niceee..tho Santa WONT be leavin me one of them this year!

Its so cheap over there for geetars compared to here i.e. Gibson les Paul Studio (the new mahogany one from Musicians Friend) $750...same guitar here £700 !! Now, I can get $1.89 to the £1!!! So..hows that for a savin!!

Aye - I do love ma epi les paul (cherry sunburst - how I love it) but I would love it more if it said Gibson on the headstock!

Coco,

What do you have for pickups in the epi les paul? I've been thinkinh about buying one cheap on eBay, and then hot rodding it with some Seynour Duncan humbuckers or something. Do you think it's worth it. I'd like something besides my Tele for playing live, and I'd feel more comfortable with a $300 geetar than a $800 geetar.

Is your epi roadworthy?

I hate Les Paul guitars...that said, I dunno what I want for Christmas...a good, steady, well paying contract job comes to mind...and maybe a good stock pick to buy. It's a crappy market, things are low, now is the time to BUY BUY BUY.

well then imagine where it will be as time progresses....

Could be HRC Corp. with a headquarters like the new Best Buy office...(Christ! the only thing that building is missing is snipers on the roof, a moat and its own declaration of the 51st state.)

dB Masters CEO, Noize2U CEO, Flame VP, Coco President of international relations, Jason H. pimp,

(hope this pimp thing don't get outta hand, I just like the word and using it for my favorites in life)

i.e db Masters is a Viking pimp...

As For XMas...a new MB and CPU would do me well. Good way to kick off my PC building efforts.

I have just found Les Pauls boring and cliche', they are too heavy and far to expensive. And if a bass player tells you a guitar is too heavy, that's saying sumthin'! I had a couple in my younger years...never dug 'em, not the sound or the playability. I am more of a fender guy as far as the common guitars go, but at heart, I love my Washburn A10, ya know, the old Carlos Cavazo series.

Oh, and Jason, a company can only have one CEO. Paul would be more of a COO or more likely a CIO.

I hear you on "heavy" part. A bandmate of mine just dumped his old Les Paul in favor of a G & L ASAT semi-hollow body. His back has been thanking him ever since.

He bought it at Brickhouse Music in River Falls. Have you ever been there? They have some good stuff there, but really lacking in the home studio department.

Jim

I run it just now with the pickups it come with. I was gonna do just that - what you plan with the seymours and AYE for sure it WILL be worth it.

I read sooooo many reviews and spoke to so many folk who done that and get THAT sound now from the EPI. Mine has a finish better than some Gibsons so I love mine.

I take that heavy comment but after 10 years with ma Fender Strat ah went back "hame" so to speak to the les paul. I started with a les paul and the last 4 songs I recorded have been with it. I wont go back to the strat much these days tho I did do Dead Flowers and Candy Girl with it.

I think Id love a Les Paul studio but I reckon Id get that sound with the Seymours in the EPI. A Good plan Jim. As for the sound: Page, Young, Joe Perry, Slash and many others - I love the sound maself. As I say, I dig ma Fender but the les paul is for me now.

Not sure what I want for Christmas yet. Maybe a new Acoustic guitar, but I wouldn't play it much so I don't know. Maybe a "real" sound card, or maybe I'll finally break down and replace my SG.

I've never cared much for Les Paul's and even less for Strats, but I love my SG. :) I doubt the Studio Les Paul would sound any better than what you have Coco, the good LP's are nearly double that.

A new analog modeling synth. I miss my Juno terribly and feel a deep seated need to replace it with something along the hybrid line. Maybe a Virus or something from Nord. I just dont know. Ben at Music go Round has an Alesis Ion I am lusting over right now, but I dont know if it really what I want. But ohter then that maybe a couple big external network hard drives. They are getting cheaper by the day, and Tuna is filling his drive with new music and such every day.

A smokey amp would definitely fit!

In the studio's xmas stocking - something for mixing down and/or mastering? Any ideas?

Yo Forty: Go over to almostfamousmusic.net and check out the Thoughts of Inspiration section on there. My wife found a way to get a free Ipod thing and left details in that post on there about it. I don't know nothin about it, but it might help you out in your search for an Ipod man. :)

As for what I want for X-mas, the list changes on wants and needs all the time, but when I finally sat down lately and determined needs over wants the following is what I need to finish off my home studio for personal use: www.musiciansfriend.com/s...ust_id=96383827

If I ever go commercial, there will be a whole 'nother list to discuss, but for the time being I decided I am happy just producing my own projects (two bands I play in, and my solo material) and launching them on my label. *shrugs* :)

BoysMum, I would normally recomend Wavelab from Seinberg as a two track mastering editor. But Sony SoundForge is a more then exceptional piece of software and a bit better priced.

Wavelab is a much deeper editor to be honest, but it might be overboard for most small project studios.

That said, SoundForge does come with a very complete set of pluggins to work out the kinks and finish off the recording and get it ready for CD.

I use it mostly as a sound design tool as it is a bit more funtional in that respect. But again, Wavelab excells when I am working on multi-track projects.

Flame, Loki needs a bit more in a keyboard, as the Oxygen 8 is only 2 octaves of keys. It will limit the amount of movement he has for laying synth tracks down in a quick manner without having to switch zones all the time.

But indeed, it is defo one kool tool if you can manage the slim amount of keys.

Thanks for the advice Noize...great...I had a look at Muso's Friend...there wasn't a lot of info.

Coco seems to like SoundForge...so is it purely a price difference thing?

And also Noize, what does it mean 'two track'? Does everything, like say 24 tracks goes down to two? For what reason? Sorry, if these questions are a bit basic.

Cheers :-),

I've used both and I reckon Forge is easier to use with pretty much equivelant results (tho I hear wavelab is better for video work or which I do none!!).

If you need a capable app, Forge will do the job. Its simple to use and most powerful. ITs cheaper than wavelab and it is available easily.

If you need a good masterin app, Forge will do the job. However, try both if possible - see what yi like. I like both, I just prefer the FOrge.

Good luck

Coco.

I find WaveLab much easier to work with, and have been using it since version 1.5. Sound Forge I have always found kinda clumsy and slow. Though I have not used the most recent version of either.

Sound Forge has always been better with video, since until v5 WaveLab has never even HAD video playback as part of the app. Sound Forge also has a history of having a greater selection of codecs with which to encode your music into different file types such as mp3, real, windows media, quicktime and much more, wereas WaveLab has always had mp3 and a couple others and that's it.

That said, WaveLab, in my opinion, has a more intuitive interface, better realtime plugin master section and such things that make usability much better.

Yep, what dB said.

Anyway, BM to answer the 2 track 24 track thing. Wavelab or SoundForge are simply where you would do the final bit of tweaking on the stereo mix you would export from your main recording application. They are much better suited for the job as they have pluggins directedmore towards finishing the sound as opposed to recording or mixing it. Meaning they have EQ's that are finer tuned, they have multiband compression, and maximizers that are tuned to be used to get the finished stereo mix ready to burn to CD.

And no SoundForge is no longer clumsy as in the old days. I still as I said, prefer WaveLab for the main pre-mastering or mastering, and I use SoundForge mostly for the tools it has which are much better suited to the sound desing stuff I do. And yes, SoundForge does have a much larger pallette of audio and video codecs that it can export to. But that is what it was built for, preparing auiod for several differant formats.

Hope this answered it a bit BM, if not let me know.

yeah flame, as I told ya in IM the other mornin' I need a bit more keys than the oxygen allows. Otherwise I'd go for the oxygen.

As far as wavelab goes, I've got Wavelab 4 and have had it since I upgraded from the bundled version with the audigy, and that was a few years ago. I still can't figure out how to use it really, I can only do basic editing and stuff.. but it's powerful if you take the time to learn it, I know that much

Musician's Friend delivers to some places but not others, most of the reason is that some of their vendors request that they don't market in certain places...I have talked to them aboot it repeatedly.

However, as a rule yes, if somebody clicks thru a MF link from this site, HRC gets commission from the sale. The money in question is used to pay for the expenses to run the site to keep it online. I don't ever expect to get indepenedently wealthy from HRC, but, as I have said many times before, I just want it to make enough to support itself. Which for the last several months, it has done thanks to the generous support of all you groovy HRC members buying though affiliates and subscribing to HRC Pro.

Thats cool dB...I'd like to support HRC in any way I can and if the price paid through MF (after conversion and bank costs etc) is less than I can pick it up here then everyones a winner.

Like we've said before re generosity...what goes around, comes around.

Cheers and thanks for clarifying the situation,

Glad to clarify. I never expect anyone to pay more just to support HRC, but MF has pretty good prices. Before affiliating I researched a few places to find the best place for price/selection/availability and MF seemed the best option.

When affiliating, the T.O.S. for each states that you can not advertise for other competitive companies, so I had to pick the one I deemed best. While nothing is good for all, MF seemed the best overall...

Cool dB...I've just finished emailing MF re whether they ship to here.

Best price here appears to be much more than MF depending on cost of shipping. So that sounds great!!! Another facet to HRC that is extremely helpful.

Steel Drums? Are you looking for a manufacturer, and a particular size set? I as well love the sound of steel drums, I have a spectacular sample of them, but alas it is set up to run in SampleCell. I must get them converted to run in a newer sampler.

Anyway, yes I know a bit about them. And I have even gone as far as making a small set of them. Not an easy task either.

But ask away and I'll see if I can be of some help.

You made a set yourself??...an easy task?...would definitely not be what I am thinking!

I don't know anyone else who likes steel drums. My son doesn't mind them, but I'm always attracted to the sound of them when I hear 'em.

I don't know what I should get...do you think I should just start with a lead pan or get maybe tenor doubles? I know for sure I couldn't make a set...man that's like wow!

Cheers,

BM

Making them was definately not easy. They were a simple small set. A friend who was playing in a Reggae band back in the late 70's talked me into trying to make them. He had a set his father made, (yes he was from Trinidad) and they were very cool. So I tried it more as an experimement and they didnt turnout to bad.

I would not try it these days as my patience is not what it used to be. But it was fun indeed. I never did learn how to play them well though, but I did try.

To be honest the double tenors are a bit moe versatile, but I know here the full size 55 gallon steels are not cheap. I think a 16 gallon lead is around $150.00 US but prices do vary. They may be had cheaper down under but I cant say for sure.

I guess I would say have a try at some and if you are so inclined I would maybe do the double tenor.

But a single lead in a 55 is a pretty good start for sure. Then maybe progress into the double's.

Nice one Presley ! heh

I'm giving the gift that keeps on giving... to my 'clients', of course . "64-bit Land"... which will mean a complete rebuild, and with prices the way they are right now, I'd be a fool not to roll the ball . Also, there's the fact that my current systems capabilities have started to disclose their limitations . So my wishlist entails(sigh)...

Motherboard:
www.zakpc.com/product_inf...roducts_id=4729
Processor:
www.zakpc.com/product_inf...roducts_id=4711
Ram(x2):
www.zakpc.com/product_inf...roducts_id=4775
Hard Drives:

and...

Video card:
www.zakpc.com/product_inf...b1deb0321d6f183
(I buy from Zaks 'cause I never pay what's on the tag)

Now whether my 'clients' have been good enough to 'deserve' this is surely within question, but far be it from me to make that call . ; ) I hoping that the M-Audio interfaces I currently use, and my 19"FS-monitor should be fine . Will they ??? Did I miss anything ?

Me for Xmass, dual 19" flat panels. Maybe a faster video card, but I'm good really with a 256 card allready.

The boyz, an upgrade to the same chip I am running and more ram. A full update to almsot the same level of recording and synth software as on my box. And moving their box out of the game room closer to the drum trigger kit. Ulterier motive there, makes it easier for me to record drum parts. :-)

Speaking of vid cards. I just bought the BFG 7950GTOC from newegg to pair up with a 1.86Ghz Core Duo 2. I am simply amazed, this system easily outperforms my P4 3.2HT sporting 2x7800GTX's in SLI with ease, that should not be the case. The little Conroe that could is the fastest thing I've ever owned and I bought the lowest end processor available. Sims2 for the wife used to load in 30 seconds, now it's 5.

The card was only 250 the other day, I got the last one in stock and now they are 280.

'sfunny, that two year jump in the thread....

My buddy just becamethe VP of Operations at Seymour Duncan, so I'm going to try to have 'er indoors cut a deal (if my buddy can do it). A couple of new humbuckers on the Omen should be nice.

Also, coming into a little inheritance. Before it all disappears into the money pit I call a house, I'm going to 'steal' a few dollars for a nice acoustic guitar. I have a friend who's a luthier in Pennsylvania. I know he has some nice wood stock, so I'm going to just throw the cash his way, and tell him to surprise me....hehehehe! I'll have an heirloom!

Reading up thread there was a thing on Les Pauls (with dB-Wan's fantastic line "And if a bass player tells you a guitar is too heavy, that's saying sumthin'" - Still laughing at that one!). I don't like them only due to the scale length. The spongey feel messes me up. Just a peronal thing.

Oldest thread rez ever! haha. This year, I'm going for a new mixer, or a god mic pre to bypass the mixer. Don't know yet.

I've been selling off bits and pieces of my gear as well. I sold two guitars, some outboard gear and a couple of mics. It all looked pretty cool sitting in my studio, but that's about all it was doing there. I have a son in college and another one will be there in a year and a half. I need $$$ more than I need gear.

Damn...is this a sign of maturity?

For me it's not really needing or wanting the money or anything, I just simply don't use it any more...these days I can get by with MultitrackStudio, GuitarPort and a few virtual synths...

Me too. GarageBand and my RP2000 and my Behringer B-5 are about all I use anymore...(and even that's not as often as I'd like)

Ya, I have gotten rid of most of my unused stuff over the last couple of years. For me it isnt the money thing either. Just the hardware is replaced by software now for most of the synths. Just a few remaining in the rack now. And those will soon be replaced as I found a nice program that can automaticly sample the last of my hardware synths and then out the door they go. The last remaining processers though I am going to be hard pressed to let go. They dont get used real often, but they do some things I still cant quite do in software yet.

And Loki, nothing here in that price range either.

Oh ya, dB, Tuna and I had our little Black Friday trip to Best Buy this morning. I got mine but cant open it till Xmass, which is fair I guess even though it is my money. But I got a screaming deal on a pair of Samsung 19" wide screen flat panels. Should be nice once that is up. Especially with the new stuff in Sonar 6 and the bigger Native Instrument synths these days. Eating up a ton of screen real estate.

Played the Tele last night, better on some tunes. To make sure I played it I left my Strat at home. It was more difficult to play cos I'd raised the bridge. We were just guitar, bass, drums n vocals and it sounded a bit empty in places so I need to boost it up a bit and I'll have to take the Strat as well in future. On one tune I played mandolin for a laugh.(it always wins the audience over)

Most of the Mexican tele's had pretty good pick ups in them. Although some were a bit on the weak side. First thing I would do is do a set up to get everything where it should be. Pickups at the right height, bridge and intonation set properly. The simple things really. Then see how it sounds and go from there.

Personally the pickups are the first thing to go for me, that and the tone knob or knob's.

Also, pop the back cover and make sure all the solder joint's are good to go. Some of the workmanship was under par, but really very little of it. But it is worth a check to see.

Thanks for that, will do. First Im going to re-string it,he had already done it for me but they dont look like they're from the same set,and there's not enough windings on some strings.Cheers.
