Okay I have a MXL990 and I use the pre-amp on my mixer.Itsa UB802 Behringer Mixer.
Well I hooked a cable to go from "MAIN OUT" to "MIC IN" on my computer soundcard..
But sum1 told me go from "MAIN OUT" to "LINE IN" on my soundcard, but when I go that, the wave is unclear, and extrememly large even when I lower the volumes on my mixer and lower the gain input for my mic..

^^ Db told me to get a compressor and it'll handle this^^ by the way he was a great help

.
.
.
But then someone on another website said "get a seperate mic preamp to control you input volume and such then connect that to the mixer"

Could I do that or no?

I would suggest the preamps on the mixer will be just fine. And, the MIC IN on soundcards (unless a high quality card) is generally useless. LINE Level is what you need so whoever advised yi that was spot on.

As dB said, get a compressor and it will handle the job nicely.

You could get another preamp but why bother when the Behringer's pre's will inveriably be fine?? No point to ma reckoning bud.

Good luck

Coco.

actually i'm kinda worried for you....
any sound card should really be able to handle a line in signal from a mixer, especially with the trim way down on the built in preamp.

It sounds like you have a case of crappy sound card to me. Instead of investing in a seperate preamp, i would invest in a new sound card. you can get the m-audio audiophile 24/96 for $100. cheaper than any preamps.

Think about it :)

So, if sending the signal from you mixer to your mic in of your soundcard is working, I'd go back to that. Although, for sure a new soundcard would be sweet.
