Drift Away - Feedback & Comments Reqd!

Hey Guys

Here's an (almost) complete version of the classic Dobbie Gray track - Drift Away.

www.badmartini.co.uk/driftaway.mp3

Its a BIG variation of the original - I am REALLY concerned with your opinions on the guitar mix. I think I've finally found the sound I want...its different from ALL my other tunes guitar wise - your thoughts on the guitar tones is most, most welcome and needed.

I've had a lot of sounds but this is the first one I really like so I'm keen to know yer thoughts.

Still to add in the bass but thats in the bag and a wee solo at the end but other than that, its done.

Im quite happy with this one but as ever, as much feedback as you can provide is MOST welcome.

Thanks guys

Coco.

nice-really nice. thats "garage band" guitar sound. Im on headphones at the office-but here it sounds a like it could use a little more depth and a touch of deep end. but adding the bass may make it fit as is. hmmmm, answered my own problem.. Sounds good. Thisll be a great one once you finish it up.

Hey Tony - that is quite funny! Gettin censored by accident! hehe

Thanks for those comments...aye - bass is needed. For sure, I think that'll smooth it oot.

I do like the sound of the left guitar tho - garage band eh...never thought like that but I can honestly say - for YEARS - ive strived for a non-distorted (too much) crunch which I think I found.

Good man - thanks for the comments.

you send a chorus vox to flame yet? what? why not- takes 10 minutes and you already have everything turned on!

I really dig this. The guitar sound is really powerful without being overbearing or too "Wall of Sound." I agree that bass will definitely round this out - but otherwise, I really like it. The bass will provide a really good anchor for the chords -they sound good but get a little muddy. If the bass is going to really accentuate some of these chord changes, you're in good - no question! Thanks for a fun listen!

Cheers Sirrus...

Now I thinks I should have defo whacked that bloody bass on first!! Doh!

I'll probs do it tonight and repost. That mud may be the second track which is distorted geetar playing a blues riff...aye..will look at that.

Hey Tony - I missed this vox thang. I'll have a go at this too tonight. Cheers boss ;-) !!

Thanks for that Tony...I had noticed the gap (somewhat intentional - a bit of luck too!) and thought - that'll dae nicely for the bass! he!

Cheers for givin a second listen. I like the cleaner guitar maself..thru the les paul, its exactly what I wanted. Im gonna try this sound from now on as much as poss, refining and perfecting til i get it just right.

Cheers guys...

Hey Tony - glad ya liked it. I'll try yer sayin but it may be lost on the folk I work with.

This is my first real attempt at a straight out and out rock n roller with minimal fuss and it took me the least time EVER to record! It took me just 2 nights (about 4 hours I think in total).

For me, thats a REAL achievement...happy I am!

Jim, good to hear from ya - hope the hand is on the mend! Thanks for the comments too - much appreciated. Aye, harmonies are something I really must get more off...I think, I will do a tocuh of this when I adjust the mix to bring up the lead guitar a little.

A good point my friend...

Cheers again y'all.

I like what you did with the guitar... that little descent after each verse... very cool . This is a good song to mess with... lots of little spaces to add stuff, with the way you set it up ! Yeah, nice guitar sound as well ! heh heh... sounds like you really meant the words, too ! Great jeoarb, man !

Cheers Hue - thanks for listening.

Aye - I kinda ripped up the original chords and started again with a bluesy rocky theme.

I like to do that to songs and I plan on doing this with my new songs Im gonna record. So this actual sound is what I'll probs use, maybe with better drums (these drums lack imagination I know but this is a cover - my own tunes I always put mroe time on drums).

I'd love a real drummer but alas, need to mess with a Zoom machine!

Cheers...

Very cool version of a great song Coco! I really like the guitar tone as well, fits perfectly with what your doing. You did a great job on the vocals as well. The only thing I hear wrong at least on my system is the bass is no where to be found, and that's odd because on my system/speakers it's usually too pronounced on the bass. :)

Very nice job though, love the song, and the version of it you've done. :)

btw. If you get me a mix with no drums on it I'd love to give the drums a shot, with my new kit.

Hey OldDog

Glad you took a listen and thanks for the comments.

Funny that - I had listened for the bass and thought it to be at best, too LOUD!! Gez, thats the phones on the Discman and also the hifi but I will have another listen as I always like to check waht others say as I am often too close to the mix. Good man...

RE: THe drums..Olddog - if you can play some drums for me I will be forever in yer debt my friend. I'll try and get up the studio tonight and do a mix with nae drums then I'll pass ya a link. A 128kps MP3 OK?? I do like the sounds of my machine..sounds are good, but I am nae drummer and often times thats what ruins my songs - poor drums. So, if you can do that - I'd be very greatful.

Thanks very much indeed.

Cool, 128kps MP3 is fine. Soon as I've got something together I'll let ya know. :) Once it's finished and you like it, I can upload the wavs for you so you can mix them. What BPM is it? I may want to put a click track with it especially for a lead in. This is gonna be fun!

The bass is sounding better now, I can hear it pretty well now. :)

Hiya Olddog

Im pretty sure its 135bpm. Aye, I mixed the bass up a bit more, everything except the rhythm geetar (cleaner one) and the vox just a smidge.

I think its a far better mix now.

That would be great Olddog. You should be able to get the mix from this link:

Cheers buddy...

Aye, this should be great.

nice little leads too.

you suffer like i do.. no real drums. they sound good and they fit perfectly, but real drums always help flesh things out.

coco, I love it. That is one of my fave Dobie G tunes and you rocked it out. I was expecting a standard cover, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. It really rocked it. Indeed, it sounds better with the bass in it. I would maybe touch the bass with a bit of compression to make it punch a bit more. That might help it over come the midrange assault of the guitars, which fits the classic sound you are getting.

olddog, you gotta get in on the G n R cover of Rocket Queen as we need a real drummer there as well. I offered but I think we would be much better served by your talents.

Here's a rough take coco, let me know which chorus part you like best (1st or 2nd), and if you want me to tone it down a bit. :)

I still have to practice it a bit more, for a final take, but it's getting close I think.

OD, which kit did you use? I like the raw snare you got from that. Or did you make a custom kit on the Roland for that?

That's the DeniRock kit, which I made quite a few edits too. The snare I down tuned (around -50 I think), shortened it's decay and I lowered tha ambiance level all around. It's the main kit I've been messing with and I have about 4 versions of now. :)

THAT IS GREAT MAN!!! Never did I imagine this would end up sounding EXACTLY the way I heard it!! That is awesome dude...great great job. Ive just got back an hour ago and played this 3 or 4 times...TOP!

The sound is perfect, the beats are perfect, some top original ideas in there and the arrangement of yer drums is brilliant.

BTW, the second chorus is the one I prefer (the first is cool tae - I just prefered the 2nd for the chrous). The whole thing rocks and sounds so super real its ideal for what I wanted.

Aye, thanks so much for doing this - I appreciate it and it is just the very job! If ya ever wanna drum on any of my other songs, feel free - top top sound.

Noize, Collapse & Wrmach - thanks for taking the time to listen - much appreciated. Comments are most valid - Noize, I think I'll try the bass suggestion you have tae - see if it can be improved a bit. good lads...

Coco

P.S. Aye, get on the Rocket Queen cover. Your drumming is 1st class!

Thanks coco. This has been a very good practice piece for me, it's pushing the limits of what I can do speed wise. I'm dead by the end, I hope Rocket Queen ain't no faster. LOL

I think I prefer the 2nd chorus part as well, (not to mention it's easier <g>) but figured I leave it up to you. On the final that's the one I'll do. Probably take me about a week or so more of practice before I can nail it, but I'll get the wav to you soon as it's finished.

Thanks for letting me do the drums, I'm really enjoying it. :)

Noize, if ya like I'll get you the exact settings I have for it. I also used just a bit of multi-band compression on it which gave the snare just a bit fuller sound than unprocessed, but it's still very close to what it sounds like right off the Roland, I just boosted the low frequency a bit with it, and cut (.2dB in the mid) mainly for the kick and to smooth the peaks a touch.

Hey Dan

No problemo...thanks for playing the drums! I bought the drum machine as I had no way of getting real drums on ma projects. I wish I could buy a real drummer like yersel :-) !

Still, as I say - its awesome and I think you have it pretty much nailed just now. Its very good drumming. Just fired it thru the hifi and personal cd player - great - even better than these PC speakers and it sounded good here!

Aye, both choruses are good - the kinda breakdown feel is good, but I thinks the second one is the one that fits best to the chorus. I love the way you done a similar thing at the end of the song and for the first bit of the gtr solo, its great - fits perfect. Fills, beat the lot - tis great for sure.

If yer ever in need of any more practice, you can feel free to have a bash at any of my songs - my songs write themselves, lyrically and musically - drumming wise, they are let down to my ears due to my lack of skill with the drum machine other than relatively simple beats. I guess, its all the feel too - real drummers can get into it - the wee Zoom just does as its told ;-) !!

Anyways, good man - thanks a lot. I'll look forward to hammering the final version thru the studio and onto the mix.

Cheers.

Coco.

Nothing wrong with drum machines, used one myself forever. :) I decided to learn to play drums for 2 reasons #1 I've always wanted too, and #2 I figured once I got good at it, I'd save alot of time vs programming them and I could do things that for me would be difficult if not imposible to program. I'm not saving any time right now, but it's a heck of a lot more fun and I'm getting alot of exercise which at my age is a good thing. ;)

Soon as I finish up working on a couple of my tunes, any thing you want me to take a stab at just let me know.

Your idea is top and I think your thought on saving time/doing what couldnt be done via machine is working buddy...cause yer drummin is first class to ma ears.

I tried the drums many years ago - co-ordination doesnt come for me so I picked up the guitar and never looked back.

Aye - it is fun - I just canny do it well!

RE: The other tunes - fantastic offer my friend. I'll listen to all my stuff again and see what could be "Old Dog'd" on the drums. Probs most things but I'll look oot the worst programmed ones.

Again, many thanks for yer help - it really brings this track to life BIGTIME.

Cheers.

I have it hooked up midi wise, but no program on the PC to dump too. I've been scouring the internet looking for something like I have for my GT6 & Keyboard, but haven't found anything for the TD6V. I don't know why these company's don't at least ship a program with these things for changing settings and dumping/retrieving. I found one for the TD10 but that one won't work. If you know another way or a program to use that would be great.

Meanwhile I'll jot down all the settings I changed and get them to ya that way. :)

Well I hit a road block there, the program I had let me add sysex commands, but doesn't recieve them for exporting, or at least I can't figure it out. <G> So tonight I'm emailing you all the settings I can remember changing. :) I changed alot but only 3 or 4 them were related to the sound, the rest were volume, panning stuff like that. Sure would have been nice if I could just send you the patch.

I did find some software that would read it, but it wouldn't export the .syx file, either because the demo is limited or because I had to use the generic editor with it. Unless you have something that will take a .txt file with all the hex values and turn it into a sysex file.

I found another that if I knew how to set it up with all the values it needs would do it, I'm gonna play around with it and my manual.

Coco, nope, I didn't do anything other than the level of the mix with the drum tracks and the bit of compression mentioned earlier on the drum track. It didn't really even need the compression but I was trying out a new VST compressor I downloaded :)

Noize, in addition to the one I sent you the link to I found another that I've emailed the developers about developing a TD6V specific Editor for. According to their website if I help them develop it I get a free copy of the software <G>

It was the about the best one I came across and does send/recieve the sysex messages etc, but doesn't have the cool editor to make it easy to edit the TD6 from the PC like the ones they already had modules for. And oddly enough it's called NoiZe. ;)

Check this out Noize!

I found this for the TD6.

sourceforge.net/projects/jsynthlib/

It works! It doesn't support a few of the newer TD6V features but everything seems to work. It did crash my system once already though when I tried to start another midi librarian/editor. Since the java source is available, looking at the TD6 driver shouldn't be to hard to update for the 6V.

Hey Coco, a couple of days ago my son let me use his computer (jetstream) and I was able to listen to 'Drift Away.'

OK...Coco..this is gonna sound gooey extreme...but it fills my heart.

Everything about it is cool. I'm not sure why I am affected by your music so, still trying to work that one out.

But its got something to do with the timbre and range of your voice, together with the lyrics. But the music is cool too...of course! :-)

Now ya know I aint no pro, but I think I'm learning.

What I was amazed by:
2.51min the note you sing on 'baby'
3.09 note on 'in'
3.12+ note on 'in'

Wow Coco!

Hey BM

Thanks ever so much for the thumbs up. I tell ya - I am delighted folks actually like my music - I had no idea anyone would ever like it so I am delighted folks do.

The support from yourself and others on here is great too. Coming from being a guitarist (It is ma first love in music) to recording all my songs, regardless of how I think I sound was something I planned for years and I mean years.

Going digital made it easier but alas, still the same person behind it. I never used to sing so for folk to compliment that means a lot. I always just sung as default. I guess, it may come across in some way as I just blast it out - the only way I know how to sing (for the litttle I do). I had considered trying to be more melodic but I dont think it'd suit me.

Again, thanks a lot for your support of my music - and indeed, to y'all.

RE: Drift Away - I've loved this song for years. Dobbie Grays version is awesome and I love the soul in his voice. Top top song. I also heard a local folk singer do a similar version to mine, but more folky. I tried to add some rock (like I do to everything) and I hope its payin off. I mind hearing Bon Jovi do it with just Jon & Ritchie and one accoustic, repeatin the chorus with the 40,000 crowd all singin back - awesome.

Cheers again.

Im like shooting for so many vocalists, Brian Johnson, Axl, Steve Tyler yet somewhere in there some John Lennon and James Taylor. Hard/Soft vocals. If I EVER nail it spot on, I'll be the happiest dude alive.

Thanks a lot Noize - always good to hear ya comments. Always worthwhile...

Cheers bud.

Coco.

Anytime coco, and know this. I do mean what I say. Even though at times I can be confusing and long winded.

Confusing, Noize?...Confusing is when you review a song and put the wrong title to it... :-(

Yeah...you're right about Coco's voice together with the tenderness of the lyrics and its overall raw emotion...

Thanks Noize...I've been trying to work it out.

Cheers,

BM

Thanks Noize and BM..you know - its good to hear some good mang after some bad vocals! hehe.

Aye, now, I feel good. Good on ya's....top folks.

I am looking into readin up on some further vocal techniques - I think it would be most useful. I can play my guitar with my eyes shut and even, after a good few beers - I tried to sing after a few beers I sing the way I looked (messy!). hehe.

Cheers again - much appreciated guys.

Hey coco - I've heard all of your posted songs over the last year or so, and listening to the progression in sound quality, muscianship, and general feel... well, it's clear to me that you've picked up a lot of ability and knowledge in the last year or so. It's really coming through in music like this song. This sounds very good, coco! and the approach to the cover was just inspired. Very very cool, very very cool indeed. Dig it.

Hey Tincan

Good to hear from ya buddy and Im glad ya liked it. Aye, I think its pretty much the best thing Ive recorded so far - the only prob is - arrrghhh! I lost the Cubase mix! DOH DOH DOH! I renamed a file the same as drift away and lost the lot!!!! DAmnit...but, i still have hte original files so I can piece it back together like a big musical jigsaw! Damnnnit all the same.

Thanks for the comments tho buddy - always good to hear from ya and thanks for the positive words.

Flame, also thanks for taking a listen bud. I loved the original song tae, but I reckoned a rocked up version would suit me more than the original soulful Dobbie Gray version.

Again, thanks to ya both for the words - always good to hear from yis.

I just got around to listening to this. Sounds great, Coco. My first impression of the vocal EQ was that it sounded tinny, but that impression left before the song ended. I'm listening on a 20-year old walkman speaker adaptor, so it's certainly anything but hi-fi. One speaker is out, so if the vocals are panned at all, I may only be getting the "weak" side.

Big guitar, big vocals. Now lets hear it applied to a Coco original!

Cheers,

BM

I'll have to give it a listen. I'll go dig up that post.

I've been shirking my duty to listen to and critique everyone's music lately. It's kinda hard for me to do it without any current projects of my own to throw into the mix.

And listening to somebody's mix on a junky little walkman speaker isn't really that constructive either.

No...you're not shirking anything...but I know what you're saying re not having something to throw into the mix...

Still...'Fill the Void' is pretty cool...

BM

Hey Guys

Good to hear the critique anyway Tadpui - never worry. I also hear the start of the vocals as tinny and I have NO IDEA why! It seems to fix itself further down the line but it may be my mic positioning i.e. rockin oot whilst recording!!! Combined with reverb, fx and my mixing skills it is sometimes fatal!!!

Cheers for the listen tho - appreciated.

Cheers for the good mang BM - always good to hear.

And TonyD - cheers for bein the 69th post!! Glad ye made it from yer trip to Waikiki! Have a good one there budd.

Cheers

Coco.
