My uncle (bless his heart)wants to start recording. he got a sound blaster and threw it in his mac. he says when he hits a note on the guitar it comes out the speakers 1/4 second later so he is unable to really record. hes using the cubase stuff that comes with the mack i think. also hes going directly to the line in with his guitar or keyboard. i figure theres gotta be a simple soulution but i know nothing about macs.
i told him to login here so he can post his equipment stats.
thanks for any advice

Nov 10, 2002 03:23 pm TonyD is my nephew (bless his pointy head) He started this question but he only knows his windoze machines and has a hard time dealing with my Mac tendencies. I have a Mac G3/300, 256ram, soundblaster live soundcard. When I plug my guitar into the 'line-in' in the soundcard and go to the sound control panel and select the 'line-in' the guitar plays fine thru my computer speakers. No delay. When I try to record using the Cubasis AV Mac software that came with the soundcard, I get a 1/4 second delay thru my speakers. I've given Cubasis more ram, (about 20megs it wants about 16) I've increased the Disk Cache. I've searched the program itself for any hint. I've searched the cubasis website and downloaded the Cubasis Demo Manual and there's nothing in there about it. I believe its the software producing the delay since my guitar plays straight thru my computer with no problem. I realize I'm gonna need a mixer and other expensive goodies in the future but for now all I need to do is record my guitar and have a couple of tracks to play with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Nov 10, 2002 06:20 pm Yes, it is called latency. It is introduced when the sound card try's to talk to the software. The bad thing here is that you will not get the SB card to get as low as some. You will need to go into the set-up or option's part of Cubasis and adjust the audio buffer's to try and get the latency down below the 25 milisecond delay mark. This may not be possible with the SB, but yo can give it a try. You can also adjust the buffer size in the same area and that may help a little also. Other wise, the addition af an external mixer will allow you to not hear the delay as you record, by simply not listening to the track sa it is being recorded through the software, only through the mixer.

Nov 10, 2002 09:17 pm Hey uncle crash-my head is not pointy!
time for bed, here on the east coast, one point though, im using a sb live ona p3 500 512 ram and using magix studio 7, before that cakewalk 9 and ive never had the latency problem. is that because of the software?

Nov 11, 2002 04:28 pm Yes, some software deal's with latency better then other's. He may not have a driver that is proper for his set-up. So that is a place to start. Look on Creative Labs web site and check for current driver's.
