Triggering Samples Via Keyboard and some general MIDI questions

First off, I am using an Advance AC97 Sound card for MIDI which is the stock card and is I assume much like a Sound Blaster, and a cheap CASIO keyboard, sequencing through Sonar 2. I would like to have a set of samples keyed to the casio so that when I hit a key that sample goes off. I don't know how to do this though.

Secondly, Using Sonar I want to record the MIDI I trigger from my keyboard, and then send that to a synth, and send the outputs of the synth to my soundcard, not back out the keyboard. I would also like this to be set up so that when I mix down it mixes everything as an audio file. I don't know how to do that either... any help?

Noize will know this...Sonar, somewhere in it, has MIDI mapping, that allow the user to build a complete range of samples like you are asking about...I wish I could get into it a little more, but I only know it's there, not where it is or how to use it...

Hey Loki, stopped in for a bit and will try and help ya out if I can.

First off, do you have any sampler software you are using now? That is probably the best bet for doing what ya need to do.

Second, Sonar can be set up to just recieve the midi notes from your keyboard, an if it has a local control off you should set that to off. This will allow the keyboard to not make any noise when you hit the keys, unless you send a midi note back out of Sonar to it.

Then it is just a matter of setting the sytnh up in Sonar to receive midi from that track.

I will have a look on Tuesday at what freeware soft samplers are out there and recomend a good one for ya.

I don't have a sampler, hard or software, that would work for that. Also, dumb question, but I just turned the General MIDI off on the keyboard... am I supposed to still hear the notes when I play through it not controlling a soft syth. What I mean is if I turn the volume up and select a patch in the keyboard should I still hear it with general midi off, because I do..

Ya, that just turns it into a non GM type synth and it follows its own set patch or sound set. What you need to do to not let it play its own sounds is turn off Local Control. This will tell it not to play its own synth unless it is responding to midi notes coming through the midi in port of the synth.

Loki, what brand and model number is it? I can try to see if there is a sysex message that will turn that one off if you cant find it in the set up right on the keyboard.

Also, I am still trying to get you hooked up with a freeware soft-sampler.

Dude, I found everthing except the 601 or the 611. They are essentially the same except for color I guess. I went to Casio's web site and looked for the manual and it isnt there. Maybe grab the manual for the 671 and check that out.

Unless you have the manual. In that case it should say something listed under local control on/off. If it doesnt then I dont think you can shut it off.

I'll keep poking though.

Then ya maybe just grab the manual form the casio site www.casio.com and see if it is in there.

It is usually a simple thing like holding the midi butoon and something else usually right next to it. Then the diplay will come up with something like LC on/off and you simply switch it with your up or donwn buttons.

I didn't see the manual there. Did you find any free soft-samplers? Would IK's Sampletank free work? I have it but can't figure out how to use it.

world.casio.com/emi/download/en/manual/

That should get you there. Try the 671, and then scroll farther down and there is a 671 midi implementation manual as well. They are in PDF so you are gonna need the free acrobat 6 which is got a link right from that page.

I was looking at Sample tank and trying to see if I can find if the free version will do mapping. so far I cant find it. I will keep trying though.
