Mixing in 5.1

Anyone here mix in 5.1?

That's where the "industry" technique seems to be going, being so much is geared towards HiDef and these 5.1 theater systems...

I always like to put technological advances in my foresight but I see no need for my application being that I am not heavy into work at this point...Just for open discussion.

I have mixed in 5.1. I have used Sony Vegas and the S/PDIF out of my sound card, though my new card has optical out too. I am anxiously awaiting Sonar 4 because with that I can do all my mixing, regardless of the format, in ONE APP.

We hope to be moving to a facility and starting new with 5.1 in the next 3 months.

We have a Denon 7.1 home theatre system. This is probably a pretty silly question...but how do you go about integrating this with the Ardvaark Q10?

Cheers,

It's likely that the Aardvark will only support up to 5.1, but I can't be sure. You would need a digital out (S/PDIF or Optical) and run it to the Denon. Alternately, depending on how your Aardvark is designed, you may be able to take multiple analog outputs and run it to your Denon as discrete outs to produce 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or whatever...

S/PDIF or Optical outs are the best though...and for sure the most convenient.

So if I run Echo MIA which has S/PDIF how would I encorporate that with a 5.1...do I need to make sure the input console on the 5.1 has a S/PDIF in/out...?

Second, I have a Behringer mixer with no digital outs...It has the typical TRS, XLR and the 'L&R Tape in/out'...Is there anyway I can route the main analog outs into my Echo's SPDIF in?

If its more convenient and less hassle to run my system thru S/PDIF and mix in 5.1 I will do so...
The only thing I am worried about is mixing in 5.1 and having fit into your common day LnR system.

Last, what systems do we suggest??

Dammit, I post a general topic now it has me wondering if I should convert...lol

Thanks all!

Run the S/PDIF out of your sound card to the S/PDIF in of your decoder/amplifier/reciever or whatever you are using to decode the 5.1. The mixer should never come into play except for sending sound IN to the mixer.

My apolgies...I know we are talking mixing thru 5.1 and digital ins/outs and whatnot...

I am speaking of recording digitally.....
Sorry bout that....

I guess I would have some reconfiguring to do being that all my divices are into my mixer channels with main outs recorded by the 1/4" TRS input jacks in the echo....
