Overload Mic?

Hi, I am a newcomer to recording and I've just purchased a Neumann TLM-103. I was wondering if it is possible to damage your mic if the signal coming in is too great?

Thanks,

I would think you probably could in a very extreme case, like say, trying to record a jack hammer up close or something radical like that, but a typical vocal peak or quick peaks shouldn't do any real damage...I don't think.

wow, that is one nice condenser ... are you really new to recording? cause just hunting around the net i really dont think that it is any basic home-studio mic. ive never seen one, let alone use one, but i think you make a nice choice.

say it can handle SPL upwards of 140dB without distortion, dude that's like putting you ear up next to a jet engine.

i'd be more worried about dropping it!

I checked the SPL's on the TLM 103 and it will handle 138dB at 0.5% THD. Like Jamie said, that is a very good mike for a home studio, an the very high end side. That is a mic that will require some extreme care and should not be handled roughly. But spec wise, it will handle some pretty loud stuff, just do not use it as a close up mic for anything really loud. For vocal's keep it at about 6" from the vocalist, and preferably use a wind screen.

If you are just starting out, I would recomend somehting a little lower price to start out with. Oktava has a large diaphram condensor, the MK 319 on sale at Guitar Center for $99.00, and I believe the same deal can be had through our affiliate Musician's Friend to which you can link to from our front page. They do have a price matching guarantee so it might be worth a look there.

Yeah, it's quite an expensive mic for a beginner, but I'm a singer and play variuos acoustic instruments. So after carefully checking the market I found that I could just as well cough up the extra cash for a mic like that. And I most certainly haven't regretted it, it sounds fantastic.

But thanks for your replies! They were definitely helpful.
