Need help with volume and "energy"

First of all, I'd like to thank the staff of HRC for their work, I learned a lot of useful things browsing the website.

Second, my question :)

I play in a band, we recorded the drums with 8 tracks, guitars with a 100w combo Marshall amp(park series), and the bass with a MarkBass Head. Well the overall sound is good (the instruments are good in the mix, every single instrument is easy to hear), but compared with other records it sounds lower, it hasn't the "energy" of the pro recordings (with "energy" I mean that combination of bass and volume spreading from the speakers :) ), but i don't know where i'm wrong. To finalize the song we used a little eq (lows and higs), and waves Ultramaxximizer.
The first time i was suggested to add more basses in the final eq to add power, but the levels are near the limit and i can only use small amounts of eq to avoid clipping.
We play a genre that is near punk-hardcore, very fast drums and distorted guitars, similar bands can be NOFX, lagwagon, but also Green Day, Yellowcard,etc....

thanks for your help

Sounds like you need to pre-master. Presley has it right with the compression he mentiones. There are a number of pre-mastering plugs out there. I use Ozone. It has a perametric EQ, muitiband compression, sonic maximizer (preceived amplitide), finishing reverb, and multiband exciters. After you mix your piece into a stereo file, you apply these finishing process to the mix. It's like putting on clear coat varnish on a finely finished stained wood. It brings out the shine and gloss. The Harbal mentioned is great as well from everybody here that have used it, (and I haven't gotton a bad tip yet), It will help emensely with achieving an excelent overall precieved balance (beyond just mixing).
