Hello!

I'm looking for a nice pair of active monitors in the $200 USD range. I've looked at Edirol's digital micro monitors (MA-10DBK), as well as Samson's Resolv 50a monitors. I'm really starting to have trouble differentiating between all of the different kinds and really dont know what i need. Can someone point me in the direction of some high quality reasonably priced active monitors?

Thanks!

actually, I am now looking at a pair of M-Audio DX4 Studio Monitors. Any experience with these? they look like the nicest in the price range.

Well kamikaze, for the price they are pretty good. They are however really just a step above PC speakers. Their dynamic range is going to be a bit shy on the bottom end for sure as they are only a 4" low frequancy driver and only 18 watts output.

But that said, I have listened to them and as stated, they are lacking on the lower end, but are very clear sounding. They are not as flat as one would expect at that price range so learning to listen to them would be something you would need to do. Putting in a Cd or two of something you are very familier with and learning how they sound with that playing and then trying to match your mixxes to that.

To be honest the Samson Resolve might be a better choice for you as they aer a bit better pwered and will give a little better response then the others.

You might try Ebay or the like and see what you can find. Or if you have a use gead place around like Music Go Round you can surely find something there as well.

I bought my friend a pair of the DX4's. I was actually surprise about how clear they sounded. Of course, with only 4" low frequancy drivers, you won't have low end, more like maybe mid range. But very impressive indeed. If you are wanting something for mixing, go with something bigger then a 4", but it will cost more but you will be able to hear the differences in your mixes.

How much better off am I going to be with m-audio BX5's? They're quite a bit more expensive, and they dont have the volume knob on the front, but they are bi-amplified and have a much more powerful amp. However, the low end driver is only 5.25".

Let me know what you think

The BX5 would be a much better choice the the Samsons for sure. They will give you much better low end response then the 4" drivers for sure.
My best advice is to go out and listen to a piar or two of near field moniters and judge for yourself. That is really the best wayt to decide.
