-10db Help

hi. if someone helps me with this, i'll send good karma in your direction. Here's the flow and setup:
Guitar to ART tube MicPre to Edirol UA-1A to iBook.
I'm using Bias Deck 3.5LE.
I can record fine, no latency issues...my problem is clipping.
I think it's the Edirol USB interface/iBook. They require a
-10dB signal and the ART preamp's lowest setting is 0dB.
I won't lie...i have no idea what any of this means. I just want to record some tracks onto my laptop without those little pops and fuzzes.
Could someone recommend a device, hopefully not too expensive, that will drop my signal to -10dB. I'm hoping this will solve the digi-distortion. thank U

I cannot find the specs for the UA-1A on their site. But I would imagine it should have an input control panel just like any sound card. You might try looking for a setting for the input there. Otherwise I would try setting the input level lower in Bias and see if that helps.

You might be able to find a small generic mixer that will allow you to bring the signal down to a level the Ua will except.

Let me know what you find.

Not sure, I think I laid on the enter key just before I hit the post button.

And hey, there aint no gap in my head...

Is there?

And I do believe you are correct dB, after a bit of research I found that card is the original version. Why Edirol made it to except consumer level input only is beyound me. But I am guessing there might be a driver and panel update for it that might take care of the problem, perhaps.

thanks for the response Noise. unfortunately, no input control on the edirol and once the ibook recognizes the Edirol USB interface, it's automatic, no option is given to adjust input level via ibook control panel.
bias' settings are as low as possible.
i'm thinking about getting a different preamp: the Presonus Tubepre has a -20db pad. do u think this will work? anyone use this particular preamp?
and i haven't checked out any updates for the Edirol.
i'll look into that now.

I just found out that the Edirol uses the generic USB driver used by the native OS. No drivers such as ASIO or WDM.
Meaning, i'm outta luck, control-wise, in the digital domain.
i need to fix the levels prior to entering the Edirol USB device. arrrgh...

Indeed I just found that as well.

That said, the PreSonus units a very good units, sturdy and well built. For the money the are dead on. I have used a couple differant units from them and liked them both. Very clean sound and no nasty side effects. The unit you are looking at would do the job for sure.

And yes it is a pity that Edirol didnt think of control with that unit, it sure would have been nice. But it would also have raised the price a bit I am afriad.
