Hi Guys

Guitar Jim recently posted a topic on songwriting comps and it got me thinking...then having a wee look I found this:

www.jlsc.com/about.html

Its the John Lennon Songwriting Contest - sponsored by some HEAVYWEIGHTS big time! Some top prizes...only doonside is $30.00 per entry.

Anyone have input/experience of this comp??

I quite fancy winning $20,000, a big deal and a studio full of gear!!!! hehehe

Coco.

Contests that charge per entry, as a rule, are bogus.

Yes, we have that same contest over here, it happens every year, I am aware of what it is. But paying to enter a contest is lame. As far as I am concerned it's just exploiting the good name of John Lennon. A lot of big names associated with it too, from all walks of music, so why do they need $30 from you?

from what i understand theyre a non profit thing endorsed by yoko, and the $30 entry fees go towards the running of the recording studio bus thing. guess its easier to get big corporations to sponsor a competition that a big blue coach...

but yeah, im sure lennons estate's got a few dollars spare too.

DB...I agree with you. It is a bit of exploitation of king Johns good name which he would have hated for sure.

Tis legit but I just cant stomach paying $30 to enter a comp!!! Also, have you seen the sponsors?? Everyone from M-Audio, Yamaha to Maxell and Musicians Friend!!!

P.S. This was the US version (its international) DB I was on aboot...must just be one for the whole world...

i would enter this if i had a song i believed in.

i say go for it!

we always got warned, back in grad school, to avoid entering stories in contests that charged beyond like a 15 dollar entry fee. but i was never much for warnings.

I have entered that contest before, and never really received any response, except an e-mail telling me who the winners were (and I wasn't one of them!)

My main reason for entering songwriting contests is to get as many people as possible to hear my songs. Even if 99.9% of the people who hear them think that they are crap, there's always a chance that the 0.1% that like them might be able to do something with them. One never knows...

I'm not ready to quit my day job, but a little recognition feels great.

The problem is that there are so many people out there who would take advantage of a person's aspirations and see it as an opportunity to make a quick buck.

Aye Jim..you are right.

I think, on reflection, I will stick to ma guns on this paying to have my songs entered into comps.

At the end of the day, I'm just gonna be funding the dozens of prizes the damn sponsors should be funding anyway!!

That is not to belittle anyone who goes for these things ... not in the slightest and as I said, well done to ya for the comp you won dude - it is cool to have recognition as you say.

But, I think I'll keep ma dough and put it towards the compressor and condenser mic I am after!!

Thats really funny, did anyone go look at the judgeing panel? Not one name recognizable to me.

And I agree, there is no need to pay to enter a contest. There are plenty of them out there for free for cryin out loud.
