You may find some VSTi's to be more capable, more versatile beat makers than the Alesis. Things like FruityLoops, Kinetic, Project5 and others...

Dont tell my girlfriend that. She bought me the Drum machine :)

i was mainly going to lay the foundation of a drum bed with the Alesis and then tweak at the software end.

Is that common practice?

Can i use a combo of both ?

Via midi, yes you probably can, though I can't say for sure since I am a Project5 user. You could actually use the Alesis in conjuction, as a sort of controller, for the softsynths I would presume.

I have a ZoomRT123 which I love...lots of good sounding drums tae.

I tend to use Cubase to design the beats and route them via ma machine which is the easiest way to store the beats and also to design em for me anyways...

Good luck

PS as for setup, its better than mine!!! Aye - yer ready to go buddy...get some musak recorded!!

Thanks coco,

Drums are the first thing ive been diving into. I've just arranged a drum track with Frity loops. that seems ok, but i'm not sure whats good or bad at this point.

Thanks again

pS - my girlfriend is from Kirkcaldy.

No problem...

As for whats good or bad, let your ears judge and worry not how you do it... I spent wayyyyy to much time wasting it on trying to do things the way I thought they should be done. If I just listened I would have known taht some things were OK and others were...well, not so OK!

Keep pluggin away and yi get there in the end.

Am from Edinburgh maself but the fifers areny a bad lot - Kirkaldy is a nice place tae.

:-( never make such a suggestion !!!!!

The Edinburgers, best bunch of folk in Scotland (but then I wid say that)...there are posh parts, non posh parts then theres where I stay - someplace in between....!

I hate snobs and I canny be bothered wi yobs..so I live somewhere in between. Keeps me happy...I need peace and quiet sometimes and if I dinny get it, I get angry!! So, living here in the South Side of the city, is ideal.

I can look oot ma windae and see the Pentland Hills from one windae, the Edinburgh Skyline including the Castle and Arthur's Seat oot ma front door and Fife oot ma back windae!! Great for hogmonay wi the fireworks....awesome.

Hey Coco,

No, I'm an Australian, i just happened to get hooked up with a scottish lass (she might say go raith rovers at this point ) :)

on a technical note, Whats the learning curve with all this. I have got all this gear and have no idea how to use any of it ! mixers, pre-amp, compressor's and so on.

The only difference between balanced and unbalanced is a few pints more as far as i can tell!

coco man...you can look out your window and see Edinburgh Castle...that's awsome ! I've always had a fascination with castles. Scotland boast's the greatest castles. It's strange you were talking about this, I was just watching a documentry on Scottish castles. Outside of the castles, scotland is a beautiful country. The US is beautiful in places but industry and development seem to win over nature most of the time here...how sad.

Hey Bleak

The learnin curve is not as bad as it may first appear I can tell ya. If you are ok with using a PC, a lot of home recording principles within the apps is similar to using other apps (cut/paste/etc).

Your hardware is obviously new but Im still going doon that road maself. You have the PC obviously, Sound Card (when fitted you no longer concern yourself with it mostly other than too configure!) so thats one big bit oot the way!

Its just a case after that of gettin your keyboard, drum machine and MIC routed into the sound card and into an app then your sorted. The Compressor is handy for the vocals (I use software comps as I have nae hardware comp jsut now but I will be gettin one soon).

You will be using the preamp to boost your signals from things like geetars, maybe direct in mics i.e. pluggin the mic straight in too. The drum machine will go straight into the Delta (thats what I do) stereo in i.e. the outs on ma machine to ins 1 & 2 of the Delta.

After all that (sounds worse than it is), your good to start makin some music. The key is to keep it all set up ready and go for it. I just moved ma wee studio into the loft and man am I glad I did. I used to record under the stairs, nae room doon there at all I tell ya.

Now, its so much better. Ive been at the old home recording thang now for about 9 months and I must say, I think Im getting the hang of a fair bit. Im NO expert and dont claim this at all, but I would say the intial curve is a little steep (or as steep as you want it to be - dont go straight in recording 50 track songs with 10 syths etc !!!).

It all comes. The BEST bet of advice I have - STICK WI THIS SITE! I learned most everything I know from here. From setting up/buying gear to making recordings etc. With a little time and patience, ya do get there.

Gid Luck with this - tis worth it.

Wrmach, aye - its awesome man. Lookin oot the windae on a misty day is best. Even better is going thru the auld cobbled streets and drinkin in pubs in the auld toon (hundreds of years auld) still authentic man...its way cool. I just need to find the time to get doon and get some bloody photos for ma EP...its sooooo atmospheric they even shot a few mini-films doon there!!

Cheers guys

Coco.

Must be incredible to live in such a beautiful place. It must take you back to the days of Kings & knights, mysticism & magic. I can imagine a foggy night...must be awsome. You said your gonna to take pictures for your EP? That ought to be killer !

Cheers Coco,

I've got all the gear now,but its SO frustrating. My keyboard only seems to send one c Sharp note (to Cubase) and even then it doesnt play anything.

Every tutorial i see assumes you have some knowledge of MIDI but i have NONE.

This site is extremely helpfull and i'll be a regular user for ever i would imagine.

Looking forward to the day i can reply to peoples post's on technical issues :)

BTW - i have a poster of scottish castles right here on my wall.

You sound like your off to a good start bleak. Believe me, I'm trying to figure something new out most of the time. You never really stop learning. Yet, you will come to a place to where you've worked out most of the bugs and know how to achieve a good recording. You can do it bro...just takes time and alot of frustrating work. (well...not all the time)

Hey coco, cool pics bud. If ya play there, get some pics of the gig for us to check out !!

Good luck with your recording Bleak, as Wrmach says - yi get there in the end.

Man-o-Man, do I remember the times of getting shafted by pub owners. Playin' your heart out and not gettin' a cent. Ahhh, those were the days.

I've only been shafted by a club owner once, and that I blame on the agent that booked us anyway...other than that I usually had great luck, a couple times after bar close while we were loading out the club owner would lock the door and open the bar back up for us and our roadies and give us free drinks while loading out...so I can't ***** about getting shafted I guess...

When I was giggin', getting shafted seemed to be a regular theme for the metal bands here in Baltimore. I was in the underground metal scene; playin' realy heavy stuff ...slayer, venom, s.o.d...you know, music to mosh by. Anyway, alot of the club owners told us, our style wasn't profitable. {even though we were packing the clubs & they were makin' money hand over fist !!} So, often we were given the offer of exposure over cash...so we took the exposure. There were clubs that paid us in beer sometimes and that wasn't to bad.

Aye...I remembers (vaguely) those gigs where they paid yi in all the beers you could drink!

Bad move, we drunk the bar oot of Newcastle Brown Ale one night..and also, how could any other bunch of under-agers (17 yr olds - legal age 18) get invited in, treated like kings AND get free beer on a Friday night :-)

Kicked *** that did!!! But, we made nae money - tho loadsa fun was had by all. I still mind the night the drummer lost his stick and the dipstick stopped playin rather than use the remaining stick he had..however, I did find him one night in a rock club in town, trying to climb inside his own shoe !!! Hmmmm.... :-D

Good old days tho....but - now Im older and wiser I'll no be playing nae mare beer only gigs (unless they offer me a LOT of beer)!!!

Welcome to HRC bleak. I am sure that in no time at all you will be a master producer answering questions like its your job. I showed up a few months ago and things have really picked up for me. There is so much knowledge to gain here. Just dont be afraid to ask questions however silly they may seem - cause people here are cool and chilled out and happy to help.

CHeers for the help guys. I think i'm going to get someone to come round and explain all this to me and show me how to set it all up correctly. It'll all seem simple to me one day :)

Thanks again!
