This may be a dumb question but...
Is any quality lost when you process a wav file using a cheaper soundcard although it was previously recorded using a high end soundcard?
I recorded some wavs with a Delta 1010 and want to edit/process them on another system which has a SBLive. The wavs are 16/44 res.
Seems to me that after a signal is converted from anolog to digital using a high quality A/D converter that it shouldnt matter what's done to the wav after the convertion. I'll be using Sound Forge with the SBLive to master the wavs. Would it be better to master/process the wavs on the system that has the Delta 1010? Thanx for any help!

Oct 24, 2002 07:00 am In theory as long as the wav file is within the limits of the sound cards capabilities there should be no prob with doing that.
If you try to edit a 96k/24-bit wav file with a card that can do 16/44.1 max, well, then you may have probs...
Oct 24, 2002 07:27 am ..so the main benefit of having a high end card (converter) is simply to obtain a quality signal to hard disk? After that, you can "process" the wav file anyway you want no matter if its all done on a cheapo card?
Seems like the cheapo card would work in tandum with any processing done (compression, vol gain, reverb, etc). Thanx dB!
Oct 24, 2002 07:45 am Well, in theory yes, but think about this, if you are using a lower end card it will process it and stuff just fine, but it may not be giving you a quality representation of that sound through your speakers...so you may be doing more harm yourself by not knowing truly what it sounds like because you are hearing a colored version of the sound...
think about it...
