aquired another pentium 3, 550mhz, to add to my colection, thought about using it to store all my samples and stuff on, save em taking up space on my main machine. also use it to keep mp3s and other high voume type stuff.

how can i connect it to my main machine so i can access the files on it through this one? is there a cable i can buy to just connect the two and make a mini network type thing? be really cool if i can get this working...

im using xp btw...makes it easier presumably?

Well you really need to be able to add a network card to both machines. You can use the parallel/serial ports with null cables, but it is painfully slow, far too slow for large files.

If you get a couple network cards next you should get switch or hub (preferably a switch) they are pretty cheap these days. Then your set for networking, XP configures everything pretty easily. If you don't want to buy a switch you can use a cross over net cable, not as reliable but it works.

You can also use USB2 ports for networking under XP.

Yup Flame, it really is pretty simple once you have set one up. A Nic (network interface card) in each machine (your new one may have a built in nic on the MB) and the simple null cat5 cable that Old Dog mentions (although quite frankly I have never had any reliablilty problems with one) and you are ready to configure the software. Now configuring the software is not difficult, however too difficult for me to describe via forum. I always pick up a book on my operating system(s) usually a Que wich will walk you right through it. Networking is really some pretty fun stuff. I have two hubs hooked to a router and run a network of five computers and my Alesis recorder on it. One broadband connection to the router through a cable modem. Sandy is upstairs right now checking out email and I am on the deck outside with my laptop babbling and enjoying a beautiful summer evening. Thank god for bug lights!

or just harvest the harddrive from the p3 and install it into your new machine and use the free space directly.

I would opt for el musico's solution myself.

thought about that...but would i be able to benefit from increased processor power using the other machine too?

the problem with insatlling another card is that ther simply isnt space in the other (new) machine, its one of these little tiny things about the size of a playstation...

Unless you're accessing the mp3's & stuff from more than one computer (ala mediaserver), it would really make more sense to just install the hard drive into your main computer and use the old one for the kids or something.

Possibly not! Depending on the type of machine and number of buses you have depends on wether or not you cn do it.

Most stock PC's these days have a primary and secondary bus with a typical set up being:

Primary Bus: MASTER - Hard Drive Internal
Primary Bus: SLAVE - Secondary Hard Drive
Secondary Bus: MASTER - CDRW
Secondary Bus: SLAVE - DVD ROM

Now, this "typical" set up is not optimal but it shows the ports you have to deal with. Am guessin you may have such a set up in which case, I dunno if more busses can be added etc.

Hope this helps a wee bitty.

Coco.

One can buy PCI cards to add my drive ports to a PC. An option is also an external drive.
