Big 5 now Big 4 - Sony BMG merger gets by

What do you guys think of this?

Are we one step close to having a market controlled by 3 or less forces?

*******************************************
p2pnet.net News:- The Big Five record label cartel is now the Big Four.

Almost.

The European Union has approved the BMG and Sony Music merger unconditionally and it only remains for the US Federal Trade Commission to put its stamp on the deal.

In December 2003, the two companies decided to combine their recorded music businesses in a 50-50 joint venture which would give their resulting Sony BMG a combined global market share of 25.2%, just behind the Universal Music Group's (Vivendi Universal) 25.9%.

The merger doesn't include the music publishing units of either company, Sony's Japanese arm or its CD manufacturing business.

Andrew Lack, Sony Music Entertainment's chairman and ceo, is slated to run Sony BMG, with Rolf Schmidt-Holtz, chairman and chief executive of BMG, as chairman of the board.

European performing artists, independent music companies and entertainment retailers recently issued a joint statement saying the merger is "fundamentally flawed" and that they'd resort to legal action unless the European Commission stepped in.

One of the excuses Sony and BMG quote as a major reason for their marriage is that sales are falling because of file sharing and downloads.

Neither they nor any of the other major labels have ever demonstrated how file sharing and downloading equals a single lost sale.

Moreover, as Raymond Blijd points out here, "Most downloader's do not sell files; they use files themselves or share them."

I love music but I think the industry is long overdue in having its cage rattled. To answer you question, I think we are one step closer to having more options instead of less. The voice of the indie artist is getting louder. Now having said that I just want to make it clear that I'm not saying that I want big labels to go away. I just want them to wake up, stop ripping of the musicians, and for heavens sake please stop churning out the garbage thats on my air waves.

Ahhh yes; The plight of the musician. While 80% of the worlds populace is quite titilized with a new doo, belt buckle, big boobs, some bouncing and twisting around, some smoke, some mirrors, we insist on the anal retentive practice of listening to the music. As we walk away discusted with the recording of the kick drum the blond next to us is thrilled with that boom thing. Most folks only remember what they said to thier buddy at the concert. Nothing about what their buddy said let alone any retention of the music.

I'm going to be a dentist!, and yank the teeth out of a bumble!

huh, did I miss something(s)? what the hells going on in here dammit.

oh, I mean, basically, if this merger is approved in the US, I see it as these two companies as one will now put out about 70-80% of the music they used to. Sweet. That means more opportunity for me. I, actually we all, provide variety. I think major labels would actually love it if they could put out just one CD a year and convince the entire world's population to buy one copy. But alas, us peons get bored listening to the same tripe over and over again. They just haven't figured it out yet. yay.

Sorry Coolo and Hue, Nice catch GW. My point is simply that being primarily musicians here I doubt we will be too happy with "for money only" production music regardless of the number of major producers. I know most of my music collection is considered to be eclectic at best by my non-musician friends. Where's the top forty? Please don't misunderstand my comment to down grade the guitar, but 80% of our populous believes it is the only instrument made. If it isn't rock or country it doesn't exist. Thank god for the indy, the small lable, who while hopefully making money also contributes to the art.

Oh well off to the land of the misfit toys! I agree I want one of those squirt guns!

I'll try to make my references more contemporary in the future. I'm old and loves it! Go figure. I do dig on Shreck however. My kinda guy!
