Showing off

Okay.
Time for me to show off.

I have a newish computer for my audio stuff, and I've now upgraded it with a new motherboard, 1.5 gig of ram and 400 gig of RAID hard disk space (along with an 80g for apps).

It runs like a goddamn dream, I just wiped it all and re-installed the OS and stuff and set up the RAID, it's yummy.

Heh..

Now, there is a question at the end of all this, like so:

Q: I'm going to upgrade my sound card next, and I'm looking at either one of the following:

The DSP2000
www.staudio.com/products/dsp2000.html

and the DSP3000
www.staudio.com/products/dsp3000/info.html

Do y'all think it's worth spending the dosh to get the 3000?
Does it seem that much nicer to anyone?

Having all 8 ins and outs XLR with a preamp on all the ins seems like, in the situations in which you record, could be quite an advantage at times...

Musician's Friend links for these products, for anyone that may care are:

DSP2000: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

DSP3000: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

I've got the 2000 and apart from saying you're not gonna regret opting for the hoontech no matter which one you get, i will say this:

My recording needs arent huge, its mostly vocals and acoustic guitars, sometimes a bit of keyboard....but for some reason, i've often thought it was a shame that i didnt have preamps on all the ins. Mainly, its coz i use my ins for multiple cables so that i dont have to go pulling out a guitar cable to insert a keyboard cable.

If little ol' me sometimes wishes he had pre's on all those ins, i'm convinced a guru like yourself will never regret opting for the 3000 if ya can afford it. Moreover, i hear rumours that they made a host of tiny improvements to this and that over the 2000. Hope this helps some ;)

Congradulations William! Sounds like an awsome machine. No suggestions on the soundcard but I am sure you make the right choice. My approach has always been to dig out the xl spreadsheet and mock up a few forseeable recording scenerios and then find equipment that will suffice.

Good luck!

No probs Willum, glad if it helped at all :)

"Did you have any problem with your 2000 with all setting it up and that kinda thing?"

Well for anyone with an inkling of such things, it shouldnt pose any problems. But i am a different kettle of fish (see my Souncard thread under Home Recording if you havent already LOL). People who are at least a tiny bit technically gifted say its pretty easy. The hardest part i find is the internal mixer software, but thats only coz i personally find it hard to get my head round such things.

"Does it work well and do you love it?"

Yes, despite it being by far and away the most expensive piece in my setup, i dont regret buying it at all. I love it, its my pride and joy. I sometimes sneak it under my pillow when my wife's not looking.

"Do you have a cat?"

No. Are you selling one to finance the 3000? ;)

You wont regret opting for either one of these, IMO...

Back when I was working at Ford doing tech support, we would have all tech meetings, probably 30 or so techs in a big conf room. After the normal meeting junk was done, the team leader would ask if there's any questions, and one person asked 'Should I get a cat?' We all just kinda sat there in a baffle. The team leader kinda brushed it aside, saying that's better for offline discussion, or something like that.

I have 2, Israel and Bobby.... I sit and watch them in the summertime go after crickets, they are very serious hunters, cats are. Israel jumped up and hooked a fly in the patio thru one of his claws last week..... ate it,it was amazing... dunno how they taste, but the Russian judge gave him a ten point "oh" on the performance.

Cats arent dogs, and most people who HATE cats, dont like them because they ARENT dogs. They dont really love you, thats true, but if you exist because an animal loves you, you belong on one of those recording websites....uhhh...uhm....
