Does anyone know how I get that "Compressed" Sound out of my vocals... it's hard to explain what sound I'm looking for... It's like you're singing into cupped hands... the band TOOL uses this effect a lot, as well as other rock bands. If anyone knows what i'm talking about... man I'm rambling, sorry

Apr 20, 2002 05:24 am Hey, I have an idea, try talking into cupped hands? hehe
Seriously, we actually discussed this on the last forum before we moved, the way I get that type of sound is to either go with cupped hands around the mic, or make a bell curve out of the EQ boosting the mids and severly cutting the highs and lows as well as applying a little reverb and/or chorus if you want to add a little "megaphone" sound to it as well...

Apr 20, 2002 12:09 pm hehe... Guess I'll have to try cupping the hands then. As far as the EQ thing goes, I'll try that too. I was just wondering if there was a studio trick to get that sound. But if Cupping the hands around the mic works then I'll try that first, saves me some money. Thanks

Apr 30, 2002 10:33 am yeah, if you mean like in stinkfist and eulogy, that kind of vocal sound, to the eq thing like db said and add a bit of distortion. you could add the distortion before going into the computer, if you wanted, but i mean i've done it using sound forge distortion which is quite frankly crappy. just a bit makes it sound really good and hot though....
Apr 30, 2002 11:22 am There is no good distortion once you are on the PC, always put distortion on beofre you get the signal into the sound card...
or, that's my opinion anyway.
