I am looking for the best way to record 16 tracks using my PC. The attempt is to record a large drum kit and need about 12 tracks and at least 3 scratch tracks.

I was initially looking at the M-Audio 10/10. But that is only 10 in. I need 16.

Please give me a break down on the absolute basic I need to be able to record 16 tracks simultaneously.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

Is there an absolute need to record each piece of the drum kit to a separate track? If not, you can just get a mixer with 12 or 16 channels and send it to your soundcard via the line outs.

Yeah, there is a need. I would prefer to record at least 12 tracks, 16 preferably.

Lost for words with all to say.

I have the 1010 and I record drums all seperate. This works good as far as control but the bleeding of the different drums going in other mics is aggravation (like, the snare mic will pick up A LOT of the high hat, mess like that). Actually with the 1010, it's only 8 in. The other two are the SPDIF in and MIDI in. So, what I had to do and what you are going to have to do is have two sound cards. I have the Aardvark 20/20+ that is very similar with the 1010 but not as good in my opinion. Wish I had a second 1010 but I'm doing fine with what I got.

I have found out now that I have this same drum set with the same mic set up live now, that you could probably do just as good recording the drums with only, lets say, 4 or 5 mics. At my church where this drum set is, I have both my Audix overheads and kick drum mic, going to add another mic to pick up some more snare. Honestly, I haven't tried just yet to record just with this, know I will need something to pick up more toms instead of alot of cymbals in the process, I think this will work. Course, we have made a custom drum cage to hold most of the sound in and the mics pick that up (hopefully, soon I'm going to have pictures to show people to see what they think). But alot of people don't mic the whole set and get good results. Guess it depends on how much money you want to spend.

I think Terry King (member here) records 16 tracks simultaneously live. I beleive he uses 2 1010lt in the same PC.
