DB is altering the site for improved speeds and stuff he has up his sleeve!!

Apparently removing graphics etc will give a good speed gain (stands to reason) so he's going for it.

Seems like a good plan - if it makes the site slicker am all for it.

Ayeeee!

For the last few weeks I have been watching logs and analyzing site performance, pages views/bandwidth usage, search engine placement, browser usage and other various facets of the web site.

Armed with that knowledge, plus a little bit of experience I have made a plan to help the site. Eliminating graphics decreases download time for pages and uses less bandwidth, the pages render faster and they are easier to edit later on. Removing the images I did, nowincluding the big header, I cut the size of the average page down by around 45-50k. While the appearance may be better for some and worse for others, that is always the case. You can never please all of the people, so I please myself :-)

Some of the older browsers will bug out on this, but only REALLY old browsers.

Understand that this is a very small part of my over all plan, so, please, let some days and weeks pass before passing judgement. When it is all said and done, it will be a marked improvement, with new things popping in, and I have a special treat for pro users cooking as well...which some pros may not care about, but some will, and I personally think anyone serious could find it as a great advantage.

As coc said in another thread...with sites like this, it's all about content. That said, this is a CONTENT driven site, HRC is to the point now where that, and that alone will sell the site, all the other tricks up my sleeve is only for the fun of you and I.

Here Here...

Spot on..get the site tip top and all the rest falls into place.

Everything DB mentioned above is NOT easy to achieve. From one guy into the old web design to another (and many non web desingers) its the RIGHT thing to do - no doubt.

Regardless of looks...at the end of the day - who actually cares aboot a picture of a mixer and some colourful buttons? Nobody!

Aye - the site change is minimal but the impact and benefits will be good. Im on B/Band so its fine for me but I mind havin the crappy 56k dial up (many folks still use this - fair play to them) - this WILL help those folks no end.

Now, bring on this wee special treat for the Pro users..canny wait!!

I'm all about the forums. Flashy graphics and the like aren't necessary for a good site. Swing away, Merril.

hey, i agree. this site is about content, download speed is important, and who cares about graphics! i just felt suddenly odd, like i edged up to a precipice and there was no railing. i felt like i might fall off the left side of the page. i'll get used to whatever changes are in store!

now, here is the low bandwidth version of my post:

true. site is abt content, d/l speed =important, & no 1 cares abt grfx! pge jst felt like prcpce w/ no rlng. whoaaaah!

Hey Forty..

That abbreviated couple of lines looks like the way I type most of the time :-) !!

DB, the Recordingdirectory.com button sticks out a little further than the rest of the buttons. A wee style sheet ammendment?? Just so you know.

Cheers...

Running XP Home @ Home and XP Pro @ work. IE6 on both with 1024x768 at home and 1280x1024 at work (work I think is that - its the next one up from 1024x768).

It was actually fine last night then went to big as the night went on. Still the same today.

I see you've also broadened the size of the screen...probs better than the central "box on a page" layout...either or.

Anyways..good luck in nailing it.

Not even able to try to fix it, I have stretched my browser well over 1280 in three common browsers and I don't see the problem. Therefore, I can't really fix it.

And yes, this morning I made the site "liquid" so it expands to the size of the users browser...to make it more suit the user.

I waive the right to wait 2 or 3 weeks to pass judgement =)

I like it. Content is King. Faster = Better (usually).

I like that it's using more of the page than before.

Might the fonts be different on coco's machine (to make the link different sized)?

Just thinking out loud.
