Random noise(crackling)

I am using an Audiophile 2496 PCI card with BX5 monitors in a new PC with P43.0Ghz, Intel 865 motherboard, 512Mb RAM blah blah..
I am running Reason, Cubase and various other bits and pieces.
My problem is that when playing something via MIDI interface thru Reason or just playing back a loop or a song I get this very random "crunchy spike" like a short burst of electrical interference. I have tried some of the suggestions on other forums to reduce this random noise but none have worked so far..has anyone experienced this?
Tried changing video refresh rate (can't see how that would affect the sound though)
Played with latency settings.
I have noticed that playing some real time strategy games also causes quite a bit of noise so I am wondering if the processor is producing some kind of interference..

have you checked your gain? monitor your gain settings on the soundcard interface and anywhere else in the chain there's a fader for gain. the levels are probably spiking in the red, causing clipping. make sure all the gains are ok, then boost volume instead, to make it louder.

Marloo

Are you owner of the softwares? I ask this because Sound Forge for example has that same sound you are talking about if the version is pirated.Tahats their version of protection I guess. I dont know about the programs you are using have that same deal, but I bought soundforge a few months back, and registered it, but that horrid every 15 or 20 second "XCHXCXHXCCXH" sound would happen when I was using it. I got it resolved with their tech support.

Sounds like digital distortion to me...

Also, are you sure you have latest drivers? Is the card sharing IRQ's with anything, tho my 2496 has shared IRQ's without problem, but it's worth a look.

My Delta 44 shares IRQ's and I CANNY get it to change this annoying little practice.

However, it seems to work just fine. As long as you tweak XP etc and have it running sensibly, it will share fine.

Whether it will share or not is dependent on more than just the card itself...some chipsets/mobo's can cause problems as well...

Aye..that will be a factor.

I have a stock Packard Bell PC which I've added extra RAM & the Delta 44. It wasnt really built for what I do but alas it will do the job nicely til I can get a custom PC (and my OWN PC the wife canny comandere!!).

Cheers...
