I would appreciate feedback from anyone that has used the new mackie onyx boards in the studio. How do they compare to the VLZ and VLZ PRO series mic pres. Is the perkins EQ really equal
to those pricey British consoles. Help me cut through the hype. Can the Onyx Mic Pres really be equal to solid state class A mic pres costing 2,000 and up. Lets not talk about specs, but what you hear. Thanks

Recording mama,

I have yet to see personally, ANY onboard pre that comes close to even an affordable seperate tube/solid state pre. Usually a board pre is a gratuitous add on, and totally secondary in consideration as far as competing with a dedicated good quality dual pre from almost anyone. That is my opinion. If you think about it, your throwing something in the circuit, that has to be small, because you may need 4-40 of them deprnding on the mixer size, how good could someone get them at that rate??? It makes sense, I like the mackie pres, but they would be considered "good" for live, more than studio.

I tend to agree with you, but I really want to believe the mackie hype. I have a Mackie 1402 vlz and use it to track live to the Alesis master link for scratch demos and love it. If the onyx sounds significantly better than that I might be sold. I'm also curious about this new Perkins EQ. A decade ago when I was 10 you couldn't get a great large diaphram condensor for under 2,000. Now you can find them all over for under a 1,000. The same with the innovation of DAWs. Five years ago you couldn't touch automated mixing with flying faders. Now it's in my home. If anyone can break this price vs performance barrier it's Mackie.

well, that depends,....... since Bob dont own the company anymore, I dont have much Faith in the development. Most "sold" companies ram themself into the ground, eventually.....ive seen it too many times. I just bought (AGGGH!!!!) a Langevin DVC mic pre, but its a total winner. I wanted one because of the reviews, BUT I tracked with one at a friends studio last week, and that was it.....it was mine. Sold some gear I didnt want to, just to get it.

I also dont use a mixer at all, since what I do is front end right to machine, but not everyone does that, so I understand the need for a good mixer.

Heck, 10 years ago you needed 50,000 bucks to do what a 300 dollar proggy does now!!!!!

I'm totally into building up my front end. I'd love to have a Manley Vox box-Apogee rosetta then spdif out to the roland 2480. I feel gear wise that would be a world class level studio. Now thats a front end. aaahhh...what's a proggy?
