help Connecting a condensir mic to a computer?

i record using my computer. i just bought a a condensir mic (MXL 990) with an XLR -> TRS cable with an adaptor on the end so it'll fit my computer. the short of it- theres no sound coming out of the mic. can anyone tell me how i'm supposed to set this up?

Yessir discostar, the 990 is a condenser mic, and therefore needs a 48v 'phantom-power' current to power it . This current is supplied, usually by a mixer, or similar pre-amp, and runs along the '3rd line' of your XLR cable . You cannot use a TRS connection for this one . You will need to go XLR to XLR, from the mic to the pre, and then you can run the pre-amp to the computer by several different ways, depending on your type of pre . I might also add that some mixer's do not come with this feature, but most do .

ooooooh, okay. its starting to makes sense now!

I'm looking at the "Rolls PB23 Phantom Power Adapter", is that all i need or are you saying i need another device? like an Ultragain Mic100 Preamp?

Withn the affordability of little tube preamps now, I would go for that instead of just a phantom power box.

Yeah, those would work, or maybe for the same price, one of those 'lil BerringerUB series mixers... might give you some fexabuility down the road, and the "Invisible Mic Pre's" are ok... they have phantom pwr. too . Glad to be able to help .

The cheapest little Behringer mixer doesnt have phantom power though, cant remember the model

okay, i think i'm getting the Eurorack UB802 Mixer

i see the flex Hue was talking about and for $10 more then the ROLLS i looked at first, its a good deal for me; and its a lot cheaper then i was ready to pay, too.
