Hungh, I see you are from Redding. My cousin is from there.

Anyway, gave a listen to Lost at the Edge on Real player. I guess it's lofi, so don't know how that's affecting what I'm hearing. The only thing that really sticks out to me is that the drums seem to be in the background and could maybe stand to come forward a bit. Don't know how to do it except maybe some eq and increase the volume? Guitars sound good to me though. Some of the female vocals sound off to me (but that might be a matter of opinion). I don't know if this helps or not...

First of all, I will have to say that your band is doing well with the timing thing. There doesn't seem to be any "phasing" between the guitars and drums. Everyone seems "on." Here are a few things that I heard that may help. Keep in mind that I listened to the "real" version on the cheapest speakers that Dell offers. Well, here goes.

1. Have you thought about doubling up the vocals on the chorus? In other words, have a natural chorus effect on both the male and female vocal parts. This sometimes can add a new deminsion to vocals in the chorus and making it different from the verses.

2. The female vocal seems off and may need to be re-recorded. Some people go for the "off" sound (e.g. rancid and other punk bands) sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Believe me, I've recorded some CRAP and actually put it out on CD that sounds 10 times worse that her track, so please take no offense. I'm not sure if the part needs to be re-recorded or re-written. Unfortunately, a lot of times a female vocal dilutes the heavyness that a lot of hard rock bands are trying to achieve. There are many exceptions (e.g. evanescence and the like). Just consider it.

3. I like the guitar tone on this. Have you thought about keeping this guitar track and going back, changing the tone on the guitar just a little bit, and recording the same thing on top of the original part? It's just a suggestion.

4. I've had the honor of working with a grammy nominated producer (no, really I have!) and I learned a little trick from him when it comes to mixing. Find a song on a CD that has the same mix that you want. As you are mixing down, listen to the CD through your studio monitors for about 15 or 20 seconds and then listen to your song and makes adjustments. Keep going back and forth, (the CD then your song, the CD then your song, etc.) making the appropriate adjustments, listening to each part (e.g. the drum mix, guitars, vocals, etc.). This is a neat trick and I hope that it helps.

5. Cymbals seem to be a little loud and the toms need to be brought up a little. This again may be due to my cheap speakers.

In closing, keep up the good work! E-mail me if you have any questions. None of the comments are meant to be taken personally. I want to help and give suggestions where I can!
