Newbie Question....Audigy midi port recording?

Posted on

I recently decided to get back into guitar after a several year hiatus...

First off my gear (don't laugh..lol)

Digitech Genesis 3 (midi in- out, s/pdif out)
ESP LTD MH100QH See Thru Aqua Marine
AMD64 3200+, 1GB memory, 160GB SATA Raid 0, 80GB PATA backup, CDRW/DVD drive, Sound Blaster Audigy, GeforceFX 5900XT

I have a very simple question that I can't really seem to find a simple yes or no answer to :

Can I record from the midi out on my Genesis 3 (a guitars effects proccesor/amp simulator) into the standard 15 pin midi port on my Audigy gamer?

Or do I need to buy a sound card with an s/pdif coaxial input (the genesis 3 does have an s/pif out)?

I would prefer to use the audigy, at least until I can get a better sound card.

I would REALLY appreciate any help anyone could give me.. :-)

I apologize if it's a really simple or stupid question, it's just something I am not familiar with (yet anyway..I am pretty apt at the PC, been building them for years)..

Thanks again all,
Kevin Broussard

I guess I left out the part that the Genesis 3 comes with recording software.. ;-P

My main question was whether or not an Audigy with the standard midi port was capabale of recording from a Midi out source (whether it be a keyboard or some kind of effects processor like I mentioned)..

If you could comfirm that it can record (which I have almost done myself via some reading..you would've thought that would be an extremely easy thing to find, but I had a hard time finding a definitve "Yes" or "No" to that) it would be greatly appreciated!! :-)

Thanks again for your help,
kevin

Thank you both very much..now all I need to do is find a cable in town (everybody seems to be out and I don't want to have to buy a $50 package for a $12-15 cable)..

Thanks again for everything,

Yeah, those joystick port to normal MIDI cables can be hard to find...try both music stores and computer stores...

Yeah, I called up best buy and they have the Voyetra Digital Music Starter Kit for $29.95.

Well it beats waiting heaven knows how long on a local music store to get one in (on of the local stores wanted $24.95 just for the cable)...and maybe the included software will be handy for something.. :-P

Thanks again all,
Kevin

yes, you can record MIDI information, but remember MIDI isn't audio so you'll need to plug an audio cable from the processor to the card to hear it.

why would you need to record the MIDI from the processor... don't you just want to record audio?

That was something I wasn't aware of. Thanks for the info (but the Genesis 3 has a headphone jack as well so I was using that anyway)..

yes I want to record the audio, but I don't have an coaxial s/pdif input (or any s/pdif ports) on my PC..

So if I record from the midi port I won't get the audio then?..that's kind of what I was implying in my original question. I guess I wasn't specific enough (then again I wasn't aware)..

So do I need to buy a sound card with a coaxial s/pdif input then and use that? My current Audigy with the midi port won't work?

Or do I just need to go from the Genesis 3 normal amplier output into the line in on my audigy? (if I could do that it would save me like $30..which would be welcome since I spent almost $400 this week on stuff).. :-(

But I would still need the midi cable to use any recording/midi software correct? (damn I wish the manual gave more info on this..you're basically on your own with the extremely limited info they give you)..

Please let me know since I am apparently total dunce in this matter..lol.

Thanks,
kevin

no... forget MIDI for now. what the MIDI is for (most likely) is to change effects parameters on your processor via software or some other external controller.

as far as what outputs to use... if it has line level outs then use them to connect to your line in on your card. if it has mic level outputs then use your mic in on your card.

i tried to find a better picture of the back to help you out but i can't get one with readable labels.

well i found the manual for that and it looks like you have programmable outs on the back of that thing. i agree this manual kinda sucks.

so hook up one of those 1/4 ts jacks to an input for mono or use them both for stereo (see page 32 on your manual for to set output mode). try connecting them to a mic level input first... if the distort the mic pre then use line input.

Ahh..I didn't think of that (I've only had it a day so I wasn't 100% familiar with the outputs).

Now it makes sense. I kinda of thought that was what the Midi was for but it's nice to have someone knowledgable about the subject confirm it). :-)

So I need to get a stereo 1/4" cable and an adapter to go to 1/8" to gp into either the Audigy mic or line in depending on the quality I get in each input..that is the general gist correct?

Thanks SO much!! That makes stuff a whole lot clearer!!

a cable i'd get would be a stereo 1/8" trs (headphone size) that splits into 2 (left and right) 1/4" jacks.

Well I don't know if I can get one of those in town..hence my saying to get a standard 1/4" stereo guitar cable and get one 1/4" to 1/8" adapter..

Put the two 1/4" ends into the Genesis left and right out and put the 1/8" end (1/4" end with the 1/8" adapter) into the audigy.. :-)

Thanks,
Kevin
