Newbie here. What's the diff between studio and monitor headphones? I noticed AKG sells both. Pros and Cons?

I just picked up an m-audio 410 to do a little home recording and figure I need some inexpensive (e-bay) enclosed headphones. I was thinking about some used AKG k141s or k240s.

Hi, I actually just ended up buying both the K 240 Monitors and K 240 Studios and it depends really.

The monitor headphones have very low sensitivity, which means you can't use them to listen to music on certain devices (ie, portable cd players, minidisc, even some stereos they sound bad on).

The studio ones are essentially the same except for they have a higher sensitivity which allows you to use them on everything. Plus they have a little higher frequency range then the monitors which is nice.

I personally really like the studio ones a lot better because I like using it to listen to music on my minidisc player. If you are only going to use them for recording the monitors might do the job. Hope this helped.

geck, to be honest if you must use headphones you want to go with the K240M which has a flatter response curve. Indeed they are not intended for multi-purpose use. They might even be considered to quite by some. But they are intended to give a very flat response. You can find better phones, but you will also pay a lot more money. I use the K240m and have very good luck with them. Most of the vocalists I have had here like them as well, so they cant be all bad.
