as I see it (don't take my word for it) is that you can go direct by pluggin the mic into the breakout box but you'll have to have xlr to jack connectors when In the mixing desk you can have the XLR's and have more control over the mics
and Panning and all that
There are some real good and not to expenxive
Behringer mixers
I myself have the UB1622FX-PRO
the same dB masters has
and alot around here use a Behringer from that line
