Will someone please advise me. I want a good mic for vocals. I like to sing really quite. Very airy and so want something that picks this up well. For loud stuff i just scream into a dynamic and add loads of effects, but really need an alternative mic for soft melodic vocals. Can someone please advise me on the Rode NT1 vs NT1A. Any other suggestions?

Sorry Mauz, I really don't know what they did to the anniversary issue. I have two NT1's that I purchased prior to the release of the "A" model and like them a lot. Very detailed, very accurate; a little boost in the upper end. I use either the NT1 or the Oktava 319 for vocals. The Oktava is "warmer" as apposed to the NT1 detail. All depends on the vocalist.

Hey Mauz, i've heard very good things done with the NT1.

Personally, i have a mid-size AKG C2000B which i have always been delighted with. I do both "up close n' personal" and also "step back and scream" and it seems suited for both, well, for my tastes anyway. Might be another one for you to try out anyway!

Good luck!

I purchased a Neumann TLM-103 a little over a year ago, and am extremely happy with the soung I get. I mainly record vocals, but it works great on other random instruments as well. It gives a nice full warm low end, which works well with my voice. A little more expensive than the Rodes model but very sensitive and picks up details(sometimes a bad thing).

YEAH! I love my 103!!!! Its mainly used for vocals here, and its a great Neumann for the price. I lost a bid for a U-87 last week on ebay that was brand new, closed at 1050 or something.(sigh)

The last, (yeah right, "last") mic I want to get is the Audio-Technica 4040, I know from reading for months that that is a GREAT mic for the money.
I am sure that Musicians Friend has them for a good price. If you can get a 4033 used, thats also a killer mic. That freaked averyone out maybe 6 years ago or so when it came out, it was one of the first big dollar sounding mics from China.

The Rode stuff is very good also. Even the basic NT-1 sounds great. My bud across town has one he uses for his hip hop r&b studio, and it sounds great. ( I want one of those too) hehe..

The fact is, the competition has gotten so fierce, that almost everyone makes a great mic for almost nothing now. And the quality differences between them are not all that distinguishable.

Yeah, I bought my 103 on ebay for like $550, after missing out on them for about 3 weeks before I finally got one. Those were the days. Back when I had money to spend on gear. Me and ebay were good friends.

HAHAHAHA!!!! Coolo, ebay is a friend I could stand to lose!!!!!. I sell on ebay also, but I buy too much. I get most of my stuff new now, alot from M.F......if you get burned by no warranty a few times, its better to do it up fresh.

It would be hard to beat the NT1 for the money. I use a AT4050 and Shure KSM44. I'm a female vocalist and they work for me quite well, when I can control my sibilancssssssss.

Yup, get your nylons between you and your mic. That helps get out a lot of hissss.
