I have recently bought a new computer and am wondering peoples opinions on ideal software to use. i use cakewalk and cubase at the moment find the layout good for things i do. i record multiple live instruments and multiple vocals, ocassionally using beatmachines and such. at the moment i improvise with what i have but i am looking for a soundcard which gives me multipple audio inputs. do i need anything else to use this considering i usually go traight from mic to mixer (can i go from mixer to soundcard?) any other ways?. thanks

Yes, mic to mixer to soundcard is how most of us do it.

Asking what the ideal software is is an impossible question to answer, as everyone has their own opinion. I like Sonar myself...

Cool edit is a good software to start with. Now called Adobe Audition. Also depends on your computer. Check out the sound cards reviewed here. Internal is better than external unless you go for firewire.

I use magix- really good low end software. i dont know how it would handle mutiple signals at once, never tried. i do one track at a time.

I'm using n-track 3.3 I also use fruity loops for drums, and possibly midi when i get there.

I'm using a delta 1010lt (10inx10out) from m-audio and getting good results. M-Audio also offers the delta 44, the 66 and the 2496, which have fewer ins/outs and different options for midi, digital, price, etc.

I use a yamaha mixer, the mics/inputs tapped off from the channel inserts into the analog sound card inputs. That gives me 8 analog ins at a time. Also, that leaves me control over the monitors.

don't forget about MulitrackStudio and Tracktion. Both very capable apps as well and at very good prices.
