Newbie, need help on low-cost equip

I just signed up for these boards and I have a few questions.

I want to record some of the music I am making. Right now I use Reason for my soft synth work, but I want to add my guitar and vocals to the mix.

I have the Edirol PCR-30 for my MIDI controller, in case you are wondering.

I was looking at something like the M-Audio MobilePre to record. I was going to mic my cab with my only mic (Shure SM58). Is the MobilePre good enough? I don't need it to be perfect sounding because my guitar sound is a lot of distortion and reverb and such. The music I make is similar to Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Broken Social Scene, etc.

Ok so yeah that was a lot of rambling but basically would the MobilePre work well with my mic, and by any chance could I use it to use my computer live for guitar effects?

My laptop is an Apple PowerBook w/ 1.25Ghz G4, 768MB RAM.

Thanks for any help!

If you want, you can IM me if you want to talk to me one-on-one. My AIM is booshirayray.

I assume service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear is what you are referring to? From what I can see the MobilePre looks like a very nice unit.
