Is it "Jiff" or is it pronounced with a hard G sound like "gift"?
I'm asking because it appears in some lyrics I'm writing...

May 24, 2004 02:04 pm depends who you ask, I say giff, not jiff.
how's that for a non-answer.
May 24, 2004 02:12 pm I say gif but I hear that the creators of the format supposedly say jif.
I say it's spelled with a g, not a j so it should be how it appears. Plus, the "g" stands for "Graphical," does it not? Graphical is clearly pronounced with a hard "g" sound :)
May 24, 2004 02:39 pm I say G. I. F. (Graphics Interchange Format) because it is, after all, an acronym!
W.
May 24, 2004 03:21 pm I usually say jaypeg.
May 24, 2004 03:31 pm That's JPEG, or JPG files. They're a different format.
May 24, 2004 04:04 pm It was just my feeble attempt at humor...
May 24, 2004 04:23 pm Oh, haha- I was wondering whether that might have been the case... Next time put a laughing smiley face at the top and I'll understand ;)
May 24, 2004 04:49 pm I hate smileys...
May 25, 2004 04:32 am Interesting question!
Definitely G-IF like GIFT though, i'd say, not least because the file format JIF also exists, which only has one possible pronunciation (unless you're german and could pronounce it "YIF").
Hope that hasnt confused the matter! LOL :))

May 25, 2004 09:43 am ok, looks like the vote's in and the people have spoken. It's "Gif", as in "Gif me all yer money in a paper sack, this is a robbery."
