Hey there,
Im just getting into pc home recording.
Previously I've been using a microphone plugged into a old practice guitar amp which is then plugged into a mic input on one of the two soundcards i have in the back of my p.c.

I recently went out and bought a cheap tube mic pre amp but when I plug my mic into it and the output of the preamp into my mic input on my soundcard I get a loud buzzing sound when recording, you can hear the vocals but there is a really loud buzzing sound that comes through that i never got recording vocals through the old guitar amp.

Could this be a grounding issue?. My Microphone cord has an XLR plug on the microphone plug-in end and a 1/4 plug on the other that you plug into the input of a device.

The cable I use to go from the preamp to the pc soundcard has 1/8 plugs on both ends with a 1/4 converter jack on one end to plug into the device output.

thanks.

Welcome to HRC...

This buzz could be anything from a grounding issue to loose jacks, to dirty plugs to loose connections in the preamps (like the tube)...get some rubbing alchohol and cotton swabs and clean all your jacks and cord plugs. Also, see if you can buy or make a cord that is 1/8 on one end and 1/4 on the other the eliminate the adapter.

Also, why not plug the preamp out right into the line in on your sound card and cut the amp out all together?
