Anyone Into 3D Graphics?

Just curious. I use a FREE program called POV-Ray. It's been compiled for Linux, Windows, Mac, and a bunch of others. It reads a script where you write vector mathematics and use object primitives to create a picture (jpeg, png). Many people use it for making nice looking three-dimensional buttons. If some of you need to make interesting pictures, you might find this program a real jewel. There are links on the website to modeling software that you can use to create Pov scripts:

Povray is ancient, but still good I suppose, haven't used it in years!

Ancient, I suppose so. I didn't start using PovRay until the DOS version. The developers have released version 3.5 this year and will be releasing an update again soon.

Blender is supposed to be pretty decent. There is support for their file formats in comercial applications if that says anything for it. Windows and Linux versions last I knew, possible mac as well.

Check it out if your interested: www.blender3d.com/

Blender is a great app too and there are scripts and software for exporting models to Pov. Both apps in my arsenal.

I found Blender to be quite buggy however, so I stayed away from it. Never really got heavily into any 3d really, except maybe in the early 90's.

The sample images of blender look pretty awesome. How long would it take to create 3d images like that? How difficult is the learning curve? I'd love to have images like that on my site.

There's a really supportive community for Pov, Blender, Moray, Poser, Wings3D and a bunch of other rendering software. I made my first Ok image in about an hour in Pov. Blender is easier according to some. Did you check out the Povray website? There's a Pov community online:

news.povray.org

Most of those people use all of these apps and know them very well and are very helpful. They post scripts you can use for free there too.

I just started with blender because I'm working on a nerverous breakdown... err I mean student video in a video art class (final project due today)

It's a cheezy 6 minute SCI-FI that I had three weeks to write and produce. I played all four main characters. I used blender for all the animations because it will export strait into fullframe AVI's and once I found a good tutorial it was east to get started. I think I learned much of the program and made about a minute and a half of raw footage in two days.

I did all the audio (complete replacement) last night... I finished at 6:45am... took a shower and then headed to my 8am class... so I've been up sense 6am yesterday EST :P... I have two papers to type today and one goes whith the video which is due at 2:30pm... the other 8am tomarrow... bla bla bla

...and I am one of the furthest along in the class :)

...and I did find blender to either be buggy or set up in a way that looks buggy but isn't... expecially with the starfield... it can only handle so many starys and the longer you set the clipping distance the more stars it adds so when doing something gigantic (like a space station) you have to remember to reduce the ammount of stars...

I have not messed with 3d much at all, just a little bit of VRML a few years back and one app I forget the name of. 3d graphics and animation is something I really want to get into a little but can't seem to find the time. Thanks for these links and info, if I can find some time, at least now I have something to download and play with.

I messed with it a little for possible use in my lego films, oops, i meant building brick films. it multiplied the work load too much. but it was neat.

I havent ever heard of/tried Blender. I use 3DStudio Max / Autodesk VIZ alot... mostly for architectural renderings and animations. I guess it depends on your usuage on what software you'd use. However, the newest version of Max seems to have ever angle covered... too bad the price tag is so steep.

I mainly use Lightwave (much cheaper than max and even went down in price since I bought it) for comming up with some cool 3D logos. I had a vision of doing my own little short series in the style of Aeon Flux but since I am not much of an artist creating the charater models was alsmost impossible for me. At least to get them to the level I wanted, I am very picky.

If you want to do animation then I would highly suggest Lightwave for the feature-price ratio. Thier particle systems, bones, soft/hard body dynamic system are rival to those that you would need to purchase as add-ons for max. The interface is also second to none IMHO.

Newtek also had Aura which I refered to as Photoshop on crack (also did compositing) but I think they recently sold it to another company.

Blender is pretty much supposed to be the opensource equivelent of 3DSmax...and is used in a lot of no budget fan films.

Lightwave is what did the animations in Babalyon 5

For film retouching/dust removal a number of studios use Film Gimp/Cinepaint ... Harry Potter is one film I know used it.
