iMac, Pro Tools, and What Else?

Hey everyone. I registered here two days ago and have been posting like crazy, asking questions about equipment and such. Now, so far, all I've decided on is a 15-inch iMac with Pro Tools and a Digi002 surface controller. I'm gonna use that with a Blue Baby Bottle Mic, some Event 20/20 monitors, and some sort of sound card for my set-up. My question is, after I buy the iMac, what other things could/should I get to ensure that the computer, and Pro Tools, will run smoothly while I'm at work? And/or, what can I get to store all my cuts and tracks without saving them on my computer? Should I get an external hard drive, or should I save them onto a CD-R and create an archive? (Hey, that rhymed!)

I would look into some external FireWire drives. For storing audio on a mac that seems to be the way to go. Also, you won't need a soundcard because the 002 control surface tranfers your audio to the computer via FireWire. It is almost plug-and-play.

For running it smoothly I would suggest not installing anything else on the computer but acctual mac users can answer that one better.

Good Luck!

Thanks a lot, man. I thought the the Digi002 was awesome to begin with, but the more I hear about, it sounds perfect for me. Also, I am aware that this the computer section, but I might as well keep this thrad going for a bit. The mic I'm gonna purchase needs a Phantom Power Source, and the studio I'm building actually has a separate control room, aside from the recording room. I'm trying to figure out how I could connect the mics and such to the recording room when there's a wall between the two. What I thought of doing, was simply building a panel of different input, output jacks that are wired to another input/output panel in the control room, which could be labeled and connected by using two separate cords. Would this work, or is there a better way?

well, as far as better? i'd put a whole in the wall and get the appropriate connector plates to connect the 2 rooms together via xlr (for mics) and quarter inch jacks (sends). that would be very 'pro' looking. however i've known people to get a 100' snake and route it through AC vents too... just depends on your setup or willingness to physically alter your structure. good luck, by the way.

Send Crash a message, hes a member here, and one of the few "real and total" mac users. Hes got an older system, but hes figured a way around alot of stuff. He uses cubase i think, but hardware and compatibility he speaks that language.

oh yeah... if you get a g5 just make sure you get the latest OS for Mac and the latest version of Pro Tools to avoid incompatibility issues due to software. MAC hardware? i can't help you there, sorry.
