The 1st Step in building a recording studio.

Hey everyone. I'm knew to this site, and this is my first post. If you read my bio, I state that I'm planning to build a studio in my backyard. I'm going to build the room with a high roof, and try my best to soundproof it, as well as get Pro Tool (I think) and get some sort of 20 track recorder and mixing board. I'm not very educated in all the equipment and hardware, I've been recording demos using Screenblast Acid on my PC. Now, for my first question:

Is 16 ft. by 10 ft. big enough for a 14 year old kid who wants to record multi-track songs? I'm gonna wedge a drum kit in the corner, and thats as big as I can go, cause I don't wanna hog the whole backyard. I just wanna know if that sounds too cramped?

Also, if you have any information on what would be some good hardware, or software to get, please tell me, any piece of advice concerning any aspect of this project would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to HRC.

If the space is used wisely, 10x16 is a decent size, depending on the size of the bands you want to have in there.

The thing in your plans that stands out to me, is that if you are getting a software recording app (such as Pro Tools), whats with wanting a 20 track recorder? The mixing board, yes, by all means is necessary, but if you have Pro Tools, or some similar app, then you PC is the recorder, you don't need a standalone recording device.

Hey Ben, welcome!

I would do alot of research and read all the existing FREE material before I went too far. This site is really helpful, so ask questions and read. Here's some links to get you started:

my room is 10 by 15 and it is fine for me(drums) and a guitar player or 2. it gets real cramped tracking live but works well if i track seperately. if i had just another 10x10 room for a control room i could hear what my mics hear through monitors(its hard on headphones while in the same room as the sound source.

if you are gonna build from scratch i would suggest building it big enough to grow into rather than filling it now and needing more room next year my vote is for 25x10 total with a 15x10 sound room and a 10x10 control room
