hi guys..... i need a sound card bad... and i was looking at purchasing... the Digi 001... i run Cool Edit Pro 2.0 i dont know that...it will work well with that... and im wondering if any of u guys know... i know the card comes with Pro Tools...but from what i have seen... i like cool edit better.... what do u guys think .... will it work... or should i go with another card...
i just like the fact that i have 2 built in pre amps and 8 ins..with the digi...and headphones and monitor capability...

and the fact that my mic cables will plug directly in to the front.... of the digi...and i dont have to worry with converters.... to swich from 3 prong xlr to 1/4th...

so what should i do....?

The drivers fro the Digi001 is made to work with the bundled version of ProTools that comes with it, and that only work up to Windows 98, not any later. I have heard they are updating it to Windows XP but have to heard of any launches.

If you are digging Cool Edit and want to keep using it I would suggest a less proprietary card like something from M-Audio...they cost less too. Aardvark sound cards I believe also have the preamp thing with Mic cable plugins, see the Aardvark Q10 right here: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear here is the M Audio Delta 1010: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear no preamps, but a little less so money so maybe you can buy an outboard preamp.

How many ins and outs do you need? Do you need MIDI ports? S/PDIF?

yeah.... i want at least 4 ins but 8 would be ideal and 10 would be wonderful... the ardvark card looks really cool.... right now im using a basic sound card... and using all these converters to get stuff into my computer....
i really want to start moving up in :
1. quality...
2. in ease of hooking up and plugging in...
3. in recording more than one chanel at a time....
i do quite well recording only one chanel at the time..and i get decent quality... even several of my friends have said that my quality is as good as one of the local studios...but... i really want to get a more usure friendly set up were i dont have to rig everything for it to work...
so the digi sounds out from what u are telling me unless i want to convert to protools...

What are you running straight into the card?

Most anything should go through a preamp fiirst before entering the card (unless the card has has preamps...I think I speak for most people here when I say that we usually have a mixer with preamps and most of our di boxes, synths, and such stuff run into the mixer and get looped through effect modules and such THEN go out of the mixer into the sound card.

i have been running my lines and everything straight... putting a little effects with a guitar efects when i do that.... but voc just straight.... that events has a pre amp and all with two xlr ... so that may work *shrug* im trying to get one thing at a time.. so the most important is the card... or interface first..then i will worry about an new mic/mics and a preamp..

Microphone and lines run at different input levels, without preamping or running a DI bix depending on the inputs you use on your cards and the types of microphones you could damage your card...I've seen it happen.

That is part of the point of preamping, running to a mixer or DI'ing, it gets all the inputs signals, regardless of the source, to a common impedence and such and prepare it at the level that the sound card, amp or whatever is next in the chain, is expecting to get.

The Ardvark Q10 is probably your best bet then. The EZ Bus is coming along nicely, they just have a few bug's to work out and it should end up being fine. The problem is that many people's system's are not set up to run stuff on the USB port. You need to have a pretty healthy PC to be able to run that stuff. I would suggest checking out eventelectronics.com/ and read up on the system recomendation's for teh EZ Bus.

hmmmm.... well i have a pretty heatly computer... and it was bought last year... its a pentium 3.. just been reformated.. with a 40 gig hard drive and 128 megs of ram... i just read some bad reviews of it... and i dont wanna spend 600 on it if its not worth the hastle...

in all hounesty what would be the best and most practal thing... if buying preamps.. and a mixer and another card would be better in the long run i want to do it....

I would suggest the Aardvark Q10 service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

Normally I would say what Loki said, but considering you like the 8 or 10 ins, in order to use those at the same time througha mixer you would need a very large mixer with that many busses out, that owuld be quite expensive. Taking into consideration your needs and ultimate goals, I really think the Q10, or some other sound card with pre's on it are probably your best solution.

Electronic Musician gave teh Q10 some very high mark's in their review. They are a very trusted source for info and torture testing equipment. There were only a couple of miner downer's, and they were easy to get around according to the reviewer.
