I would like to add that I promise not to ask questions for awhile. I have always kept my musical feelings to myself and my head is spinning from all the knowledge. I don't even have the basics down.

I got sidetracked because I entered another reply apparantly after you responded.. I don't have a clue about what my FTP is. I never even touched this computer before except for college.

I am using Windows XP. I am going through a straight http link. I don't even have my own domain, just a sub-domain.

I think I need a basic knowledge of how FTP works and what the better FTP software is.

You could probably find my link at http:/home.earthlink.net. One administrator did. But I have no main domain-www or .com, just/.

That was n incident because iit would'nt click to the page and that was unintentional, I was making light of it. I just wanted to know what FTP musicians use for their links.

so youre building a website? The picture is clearer now. Are you doing it from scratch or using a "web page design program" like front page or something

No worries- I up load to my .cox using front page. the files i upload using the .cox account management and webpage management. so i dont use ftp to upload to thier server. (well maybe i do, but its invisible to me) what service are you on?

I am using Trellix. I emailed you an apology for the confusion. Trellix is in some part pre designed and I got it for free through my Earthlinkc account.

Hmmm, never heard of it. No apology needed man, this is what we do around here! Well maybe one apology on my part, since youre new i shouldn't have commented on the triple posting as i did. DB is the guy that can really answer your questions on website management. Him and noise2u (and a few others.
anyway- I went to youre site (nice and american!)and listend to spec and dark stormy nites- You are going to get alot out of HRC. Those songs are good, but.... They can be made much better without spending alot. I saw you posting about a mic. Shure sm57 is what alot of us use. Its the only thing i use. also a small behringer mixer would be a fine addition. (ive got the 602) sounds like youve got the computer end covered. and there are some links here to free, or shareware multi-track software recording programs. check those out.
and welcome to hrc.
about the ftp... im now on my second beer. My helpfullness is waining. (the fact is i never knew much in the first place LOL) Using my webspace at cox, all i do is upload the song to thier server, then change my hyper-text links on the web page to point to the server space.
so ://members.cox.net/tonyd1970 might have an mp3 or two, and i have the link point to //members.cox.net/tonyd1970/somesong.mp3

does that make sense?

It has web gems in it if that is any clearer. But it will only accept .rn files right now. And as far as I know they can only play on Real Player. I want to do something to build the link for multiple players, whether that is through FTP or HTML or however, if that is possible. I'm going to get together with some buddies and have a cold one. I hope to hear from you when I return.

I have read most of this thread and it has really gone nowhere. FTP is just a method of moving files from a home PC to a server. In order to use FTP you need to make sure earthlink will even let you, if so, ask them about how to do it. You need an ftp address, username and password, once you have that, any decent ftp app (smartftp is decent) should be pretty much just like dragging files around in windows explorer...

An FTP application will list most any file on the client, but will sometimes not show files on the server depending on the configuration of it. Last I knew RealPlayer files were .ram and .rm files, not .rn, though that may have changed as RP has went into it's downhill slide toward total crapware.

http and ftp are two totally different protocols. http:// goes to web sites, ftp:// is for file transfer FTP (File Transfer Protocol) needs the info I described above. Doing ftp thru IE, while it can be done, is a big hassle, so don't do it. There are many free ftp apps available. Smart FTP, FTP Explorer and tons more...

doesn't win xp have it's own ftp/smtp/http server? I don't use xp but I use win 2000 on everything I have. just figured xp would have the same things 2000 has, even if not in the same place. if you know how to configure user permissions on a directory share, it shouldn't be hard to set up... but why do you want FTP? are you setting something so everybody can download files, or just a certain few?

Yes, it has IIS, which contains and controls http, ftp and smtp as well as a news server, but as Iunderstand he doesn't want to have a server, he wants to FTP to a server. He needs an FTP client.
