I just got the word. March 30 at the Dragonfly in Harrisburg, PA my band "Steel" will be opening the show for Yngwie Malmsteen. It sounds like it's going to be a fun gig.

Yeh, double congrats from me as well. A buddy of mine wants to see him when he gets here, I havent heard a date for Minnesotta yet though. You should come and open for him here, :-) that would be a kick.

but anyway, that is good news.

wishing you the best of luck with that show.

Thanks much!

Minnesotta, now that would be a road trip for sure Noize.

George Lynch is opening all of the shows except for eight of them. The Dragonfly just happens to be one of the shows that Lynch can't make.

Kenndal the Grey... Yes, the Dragonfly is from what I've heard an enormous nighclub. I've never been in it personally though. I tried to find a website for the club but had no luck with it.

I dunno, I have never been impressed with anyone that is known only for being "fast". Big woop. But then, I never really listened to him that much...but it's still a great name to open for, regardless of my personal opinion.

I would pay the ticket price to see George Lynch as all his solo stuff has been excelant. He has come a long way since the 80's hype that surounded him.

Again, good luck with the show.

thanks wrmach... I've always been a fan of his playing myself.

He's not for everyone dB. I can't listen to him constantly. When I first heard him, his speed and accuraccy amazed me. Then I started sitting down and figuring some of his stuff out. It was a lot harder to figure out than it was to play. It is a lot of repeditive riffs.

Noize... Lynch is pretty cool. I'm not sure if he is touring as "Lynch Mob" or just "George Lynch". Anyway, I'm glad Lynch couldn't make the Dragonfly show. It will be a fun gig for our band.... and thanks again.

Flame, he's a chubby swedish "shredder" with long curly hair and tight leather pants. Could never stand his music, though i have to respect him for his talent. but thats just my opinion, like karetaker said, hes not for everyone.

Anyway, great to hear that your opening for a big name like that. Best of luck

He has packed on a few pounds since the 80's Dan. Maybe I should get him a case of "Slim Fast" as a welcome to PA present...LOL! (just kidding) As long as he can still get his chubby fingers around the fretboard I'm sure it will be a good show.

I owned one of his tademark scaloped necks once. Man what a chore to play on. gotta have a very light touch for those.

But ya, he has gotten much heavier around the middle, but can still shred. Very classical lead lines as well. But like you have said, he is not for every one.

And I believe Lynch is touring solo without the MOB. But am guessing he will be a good show as he is a bit more stylish then Malmsteen.

if you want to get on his good side buy him a cream colored fender strat... he can never have too many of those from what I've read. I used to be big into him and that style of music. Congrats
Mar 22, 2004 01:09 pm

i think yngwie is a washed up piece of crap. BUT one think i do think is cool about him is this- after 9/11 he was playing in like costa rica or panama or something. starts playing the national anthem trying to be like hendrix and stuff. some dude spit on him and he stopped playing and gave everyone the finger and just left the gig. hes been in a car accident where he nearly lost his right arm, and hes been paralyzed before. steve morse once said, "now we know who can play fast, lets see who can play well." and like after that yngwie dropped off the face of the earth for 5 or 6 years. he knows he came in on a whim. hes just trying to ride it. anyone ever hear the first album he put out? funny lyrics. im still going, peace

Hey, regardless of what you think of the guy or his music...as a guitarist and soloist...He ranks as one of the best. I don't believe Yngwie was ment to be the next 'Zepplin or Pink Floyd. But there's a sort of Bach like precession about his style. I never looked at him as the "great rock ballader". But he's a great rock/classical guitarist who has influenced countless musicians in their style and playing. You can't deny that!
Mar 22, 2004 04:03 pm

put yngwie on stage with john chapman, or al demiola. he will walk off stage with his tail between his legs. there is a difference between an electric guitarist, and musicians who are no longer able to hold an electric guitar because theyd probably kill half the people watching him/her.

Thats a rediculous comparison. Totally different styles that are uncomparible. I don't prefer Yngwie, but he would in no way have his tail between his legs going up against anyone. Everyone has their pros and cons and nobody is the best at every aspect.

And may I just add.

Kendall, were on this green earth do you get your qoutes? As well as the fact that Al Dimeola is credited for some of Yngwie's classical style. He is a shredder for sure, no doubt in my mind about that. But let me see you play the classical lines he plays, regardless of how fast. In your profile you dont even list a guitar, so how can you critique a guitar player unless you play, or no another virtuosoe.

And as for the first album, I own it on vinyl, autographed I might add.

As Ive stated before Kenndal, please grow up and contribute something worthwhile here.

I have yet to hear any of your music posted here. When might we expect some of what must be absolutely fantastic music from the critic of the world?

Peace

I didn't mean to start a whole Yngwie debate, I was just excited about playing the gig.

I think who is the best whatever always comes down to opinion and what style of music you like. However, I think it would be hard for anyone to say Yngwie isn't a talented guy. I own four or five of his tapes... I just like to hear the guy play. Personally I think he plays not only fast, I think he plays well indeed! Like I said, he's certainly not for everybody, but who is? Now, I agree that his attitude could use a little adjusting... but, I didn't buy his music for his personallity.

autographed copy Noize.... that's too cool!!

Anyway... I just thought it was a good gig, and thought I would share my good fortune with you here. We don't open for Major Label Artist's every month, so it's kind of exciting.

It's not really about who's better(that would be a silly argument cause all three are great in their own right)...it's more about showing respect. Hey, there are bands and players I don't care for as far as style or whatever but if their gifted I'll admit it. I don't want to squable about this either but we do need to give credit where credit is due...thats all I mean Kenndal. Absolutely dude, Al-D, John Chapman, John Mclaughlin, all those guys are great. Anyway, this is Karetaker's day, lets be cool for him. Take it easy, dudes.

Karetaker - congratulations, man! I bet that will be a fun gig. Not to mention the fact that every musician you meet from now on will want to hear about it, when you mention the fact that you were part of a gig with him: "Wow, you played with that guy, huh? So what's he really like?" well that would be my question at least... :) I heard one rumor about the guy... about how he borrowed some fan's guitar for a minute to play it, didn't like it, and smashed it. I have no idea if that's true - in fact I kind of doubt it is, hehehe... but that's what I've heard at least.

Kendall: Does Yngwie have to be the best player in the world for someone to find his music worth listening to? For that matter, does anyone? I like listening to what I consider the cream of the crop too - been listening to diMeola for years, in fact - but I also listen to stuff on cds I bought years ago at some local bands' gigs, and though it might not be the best, I still find stuff worth listening to. I dunno - to each their own.

I kind of like Yngwie's early stuff - actually the only stuff I've heard... :) kinda pretentious though, hahahaha. But nice playing, sez I.

I take it you are fairly young, and if you are, where the hell did you get that long list of expensive studio equipment from in your profile - I hope to god it wasn't where I think it came from, yet something tells me weekend jobs dont buy you NS-10's and Blue Mic's.

Congrats Karetaker on the big opening gig. Any time you can open for someone people have heard of it's a good thing ... The closest I ever came was when my band opened here in cincy a few years ago for a band called Sister Seven (used to be Little Sister), a funk rock act out of I think Austin that had a video on VH1. Since we were of the same ilk it was a good fit, and a lot of fun once we remembered that hey, these guys are just musicians too. It was a learning expereince for our younger musicians in the band as well to see how they TORE UP the stage... stage presence can be learned but can't be taught, know what I mean?

True, I have no idea who you are. Why dont you tell us who you really are. Your father seems to have an impressive resume, (See link below) and I am curious as to who he is as well.

Kenndal, I am gald your are trying to go see Karetaker, I hope you really are. I have re-read your post's in this thread, and see nothing posative you have posted. In fact I dont recall anything you have posted that was posative in this forum.

I have been in this business for over 37 years, and I am well aware of the bands you stated your father played with in this post. www.homerecordingconnecti...=3867&frm=4

May I ask what instrument and what year he played in Weather Report as well as Yes. I am more than familiar with all the bands you named in the post listed above.

I as well am with jeus on agreeing your list of goodies is very impresive for someone who claims to be so young.

Looking forward to a response.

My father was a jazz pianist in the 60s and started touring in the 70s i believe. He passed away last june, my bro didnt want all his old keys so i got them. Most of the items ive listed were either gifts, hand me downs, or are in my brothers recording studio (basement). u want to know what size shoe i wear?

Kenndal, sorry to hear about your dad, that is unfortunate to say the least.

But please, consider their view point, while I wish everyone would just lay off, I do understand what would promote someone's curiousity about a 14 year old kid that has some of the gear in your profile, no harm in that. Also, you very much show that your young/immature with the black and white attitude you display, not that it's wrong, it's expected and accepted, but you are VERY quick to start attacking when someone calls you on your "that sucks" input on something. Odds are if you would loose the 'tude, the whole thing would simmer down.
Mar 26, 2004 12:11 pm

Who did i ever say sucked? there was something said about yngwie being an influence. i agreed-on the speed. but i also said something about there being no way yngwie would ever be able to play without overdrive or scalloped frets. hes cookie cutter. he was ripping off a teenager at the time (vai) in my opinion. and he still plays faster than i ever will. good for him! never said anyone sucked tho. i said hes a washed up piece of crap (currently) because he weighs like 250 lbs and hasnt been able to release a decent record in the states. infact his last 7 albums wernt even released in the US untill like a few years ago (all at the same time!?!). i remember reading it in guitar world. i was only telling the difference between an electric and non typical electric players. unless i missed something i said?

I can't beleive this post is still going. Anyway, the gig is tomorrow night, I'll let you guys know how it goes. I probably won't meet Ynwie or anything like that. I never really go out of my way to meet Major Label guys that we open for. I tried once when we were opening for Blue Oyster Cult. Buck (guitarist) was getting directions back to their hotel from the bartender. The problem was the bartender was giving him these crazy directions and the hotel wasn't that hard to get to from where we were. I tried to help him out by trying to give him the right directions. He gave me a look like I had the plague or something. Without saying a word he let me know that he didn't want me anywhere near him. So, I thought screw it then, let him get lost on his way back to the hotel. I just walked away and minded my own business after that.

I still can't beleive opening for Slaughter. Their bass player was on the stage and my gear was in front of the stage. The bass player started talking to me through a roadie. The roadie asked "Who's bass rig is this"? I walked up to the stage and said "it's mine". Now, the bass player was standing right beside the roadie and about three or four feet from me. The bass player says to the roadie "ask him if this is a Sunn Coliseum, and if so where one might acquire such a thing" They were both standing right in front of me... I'm thinking this is a joke right? The rodie turns to me and says "he wants to know if this is a Sunn Coliseum, and if so where one could aquire such a thing. I'm thinking, Yeah I heard the question...HE'S STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME.... But, I just said "no it's not a Cloiseum, it's a Concet Bass". I was looking right at the bass player when I said it and he just acted like he heard nothing that I said. The guy wouln't even look at me. The roadie turned to him and repeated what I said. He just kind of shook his head and walked away. I'm thinking how big does your ego have to be to do something like this. These are just a few of the reasons that I won't go out of my way to meet these people.

I think that was what the songs were called anyway. I was never a big fan of their's and even less so after we opened for them.

Karetaker, that is way to funny. I got to meet the man Mark Slaughter and he was as big a dick as well. I guess that 15 minutes of fame does something to some peep's.

And agreed, vocals were never a good reason to see Slaughter. The only good reason to see them was comp tickets, and a back stage pass. And, no it wasnt even worth the price even though it was free. We left after about 15 minutes back stage. I think most of the girls were Motley Crue leftovers. LOL

LOL!!!!!! That's good stuff Noize.... Motley Crue leftovers...LOL!!! Did these girls make you feel like you needed a condom on just to be in the same room with them??...LOL!

The guitarist for Slaughter confused me that night. I don't know what the Hell he was doing... but he would play for 10 or 15 minutes and then go back and listen to a tape of it at the soundboard. This went on FOREVER!!! Finally with 10 minutes until the doors were suposed to be opened the club manager came up to me, flipping out. "Why the bleep isn't your equipment on the stage and set up, we're opening the doors in 10 minutes". I said "They won't let us on the stage, talk to him". (As I pointed at the guilty guitarist) The club manager got him off stage and we set up in record time.

I heard a good "rock star being a prick" story from this guy at a bar. He saw Robert freaking Plant backstage at a page/plant show. Plant was drinking wine, smoking a doob and "talking" to 2 women. This is how the conversation went...

Guy: Excuse me, Mr. Plant. I don't mean to interupt, but...

Plant: So don't.

That is classic rock star

Some friends of mine opened for a band called "Strutter" (yeah, Kiss tribute) and the band was a bunch of jerks, didn't let my buddies do their sound check until the last minute. Well, my buddies got a look at their set list, and to get even decided to close their set with "Cold Gin" which was what Strutter planned to open with.

A beautiful slap in the face if you ask me :-)

What cracks me up is that Strutter is just a tribute band...you'd think they wrote the Kiss songs themselves!

Yea, some of these bands can be real jerks. I've been on the bill with bands that would act like our band had a disease. Once, we were playing with this band that was kinda the house band. After a bunch of gigs there, we actually had roadies coming up to us saying, "that they were going to kick our butts if we didn't stop playing there." Well, I'm not a physical person but I don't like threats either. So, I told the singer of the band, "I'm not looking for a fight but your not going to stop us from coming here! We had some run ins with the roadies a few times but thats all. Actually , the singer and I got to be pretty good friends. But yea I know the type.
