What is the main defference between a small and large diaphragm condenser mic concerning sound? I was recording an acoustic guitar these days and I used my Marshall V69 mic, it sounded very nice, but I was very curious about how would it sound with a small diaphragm mic.

A small diaphragm mic is made for picking up higher freq a little better. The physical length of a waveform dictates what a mic is good at picking up. that's why larger diaphragm mics are used for bass intensive freq and smaller diaphragm mics are good at picking up higher (or smaller physical waveforms) freq like cybals and they are good for acoustic guitars but to get the full bodied sound use two mics with an acoutic guitar. One large diaphragm and one small and combine the two, I think you'll like what you achieve.

Sensitivity is probably the most noticable difference. A large diaphram mic has greater sensitivity as the diaphram is easier to move (more surface space with same thickness). The other is area of pick up. A small diaphram will give you a smaller area of pick up. For acustic guitar I personally like two small diaphrams. I can blend fingerboard and "f" hole mics easier than trying to use large diaphram. But as always I have heard some real nice recordings of guitars with large as well. Biggest problem I have with large is I have yet to get the opportunity to use a room with less than about 55dB ambient noise. For most vocalists that is not a problem. Also little problem for room mics, however when it comes to subtle string sounds I hate having mouse farts blend in.

LOL

The thought of a mouse creeping up and farting on my 319 is more then I can take. But I wonder what the sample would sound like. Now I gotta go find a mouse and feed him some pork and beens.

I didnt find a mouse fart but I found several others that were kinda disgusting. I wonder if I should put that in the samples section? :-P
