Just curious of which company you all go to for cd pressing? Best deal I've seen was $1300 for a 1000 pressed cds with cover, case, and retail ready barcode which was at www.snjcd.com/cd_replication.html. And what is the difference between replication and duplication? Which one is generally cheaper?

I guess my next question is this. After having CDs pressed, how do you go about getting them into music stores? I'm sure I could make deals on the radio to get it played during amatuer hours, but what is the best way to have it available to purchase for an entire state (like washington, lol). Is there one company that will promote everything for you or do you have to call each music store on your own and make deals?

eh, your links not working. Anyhow, I think I'm about to use this company www.tapeanddisc.com. In Feb, they quoted me 1,149 for 1000 retail ready with 4 color printing on 4 panels (4/4). Their office is located in Oregon (I think Portland).

Replication is the professional method of actually pressing cds. Duplication is like burning blank cds. Replication is cheaper provided you get 1000 copies or more (maybe even 500), but duplication is a better deal if you need a short run, like say 100 units.

How do you get your cd into music stores? That is the record labels job or ideally a job a record label outsources to a distributor. If you are just starting out and are not signed to a label, then there's nothing to do but hustle it yourself. That's what I'm revving up to do. Basically, me and my partner are about to be a two man distribution team until we can get hooked up with a distributor.

Oh, and promotions is a whole different deal. There are usually companies that specialize in promoting in most urban areas, and many are focused on hip hop, but I'm not sure if I would trust any of them.

In most cases you will have to set up consignment deals with each individual store that you want to carry your music. Basically, you just pay a particular feel to rent a certain amount of shelf space from that store and whenever your units sell, they send you a check. There isnt really any promotion or anything which is kind of a downside, but if you promote yourself at your shows and let people know on your website or whatever that your cd is on sale at these local stores, people will start to buy it. The best way to promote is just to tell people at the shows, post info on the web, give local people stickers, fliers, and whatever else that has your band name and any other info you want them to know about you, and even look towards local mags and the local paper cause these are usually pretty easy to score an interview with. Now, their is one company(Ill get all their info and post it for you), but they will work out a consignment deal where they do distribuite your music to a broader area(still locally but they are affiliated with a few big name stores and they will get your stuff on the local stores shelf). We are going with discmakers for our CD's. Its 1000 copies for roughly 1600 bucks and you get a 6 page booklet, spline sticker, bar code, clear tray with color tray card and color back, all tracks are evenly spaced and layed out and all tracks are volume matched to one another for that professional CD appeal. Also, Ill get this info to you as well, but you want to get your music registered with sound scan. Sound scan is what billboard and MTV and the radio stations and all that use to make their countdowns. Its basically just a giant list of all music and how much is being sold from any particular artist. The only way a unit registers is if its sale is tracked with the bar code. In other words, if you have 10 copies in your car and sell them to your friends on the street, you cant claim them. Only the units that sell in stores or are denoted as a legal transaction will show up. Its a long shot cause you will be real low on the list, but if you promote yourself right and sell enough discs, people will hear yourself just because it is on this list, and many important industry people sort through sound scans archives. Ill get back to you with a little more info.
