Terratec 6Fire Pro soundcard
-----
I can hear static through my sound card when I turn the volume up loud (especially thru headphones). I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this? When I burn onto cd, it doesn't pick up this static, but is kind of annoying.

Are you listening direct out of the sound card? Also, do you have the latest drivers installed, this could cause a problem as well. You may also have a bad cord on the headphones.

Indy dave, that was probably your cables, or it may have to do with the compressor's sheilding (or lack of). I know my crybaby wah pedal picks up stations if i use it in certain places.

I have the latest drivers and i only hear the static when I have the volume loud through the heapdhones. But it's kind of weird because if I open a windows program, then during the process of loading the program, the static sometimes goes away. But once the CPU is done loading the program, it comes back. Very weird. Any more suggestions?

I would say it is definately related strictly to the headphone output of the card or your cable on the headphones. Unless you are going out the sound card to a mixer, then you might check those cables or the mixers headphone output.

I just realized it isn't only my headphones. It's on my speakers too. But only when the volume is up pretty loud. This is what I've tried:

(A) the creative labs surround sound setup
(B) headphones hooked up thru the creative labs fast adapter thing (i dont know what its called)
(C) the headphones straight thru the sound card

And all of these produce this static type noise when turned up loud.

So this is what I've found out. It seems whenever my fan speeds up from processing more information (like loading a program), the static goes away. So maybe it has something to do with my fan on my processor or maybe on my power supply? Someone has got to know an answer to this, lol.

bizzel, just for yucks, try changing to a differant PCI slot and see what happens. Not that it will make a differance, but it might. If it is being related to fan speeds and all it very well could be a power issue at that.

I know in the case of my sample cell card I had to switch to larger wattage power supply for it to work proper.

I've tried changing to a different PCI slot before to see if it'd make a difference but it didnt. So if its a power issue, I'd need a new power supply? Wouldn't that kill my motherboard? lol

Sounds like a driver issue to me, I have beta tested a couple sound cards in my day and beta'd dozens of drivers, statis is often an issue due to the wide range of components in a PC configuration they can't plan for, sometimes it's PC fans making problems...How new is this model of sound card? What driver version are they on now? What driver type are you using? ASIO, WDM, MME?

How do I figure out what kind of driver it is?

As for the soundcard, I bought it about a year ago and updated to the newest drivers a few weeks ago.

I've heard PC fans can cause static, and I really think that's what the problem is since the static increases when loading programs and I can hear the fan moving more.

I bought a custom computer off Ebay which had many components for a great deal but I didn't pay attention to the components of the fan or power supply.

Well on the interface managment screen you should have a tab for help or about the card. Click into that and it should give you your current driver version.

personally, i believe that it is merely a hardware issue, given that you have another soundcard in your system, either integrated (most common on OEM), PCI, or external via FW or USB. make sure that your integrated sound card (or other pci if equipped) is disabled. prefferably by bios first, then motherboard (hardware jumper) or in the device manager. I've ran into many situations like these when trying to use multiple cards for different things.

if not try the driver reinstall or contact a tech with terratec

hope you fix your problem,
rez

I disabled my integrated in the BIOS and have tried reinstalling the drivers before, but didnt know about the jumper switch on the mother board. How will I recognize that?

oh jeez, there are not many boards with jumpers anymore. You have a 2.4 gHz, I'd say the odds of a jumpered sound card is pretty slim.
