distortion sound - while your online db!

just thought you might be the best able to answer two questions i have

i have a boss sd1 over drive pedal, zoom 505II and i just got my metal maniac pedal back today, im playing a fender squier strat into a 80watt soldid state carlsbro amp, i'd like to be able to get a nice biting distortion sound for solo's and a a clean but biting sound for rythmn..any ideas?!!

also i'd like to get a recording of us playing in the rehearsal studio, i have three mics, i was thinking of recording the middle with one mic and putting the other two close to the amps panned left and right? then when i get home i cud record it to cool edit and play with each track to improve the sound

a bit far fetched?!

The recording scheme sound OK for a practice tape. All you can do its try it, and if it doesn't turn out to good, try it again differently...

As far the distoration/clean thing...I'd have a go with a two channel amp, or a second amp and an A/B footswitch...never worked with the specific models you are mentioning. There are peeps here much more qualified than me to answer that methinks...

See the word biting is a term that's so diverse and could mean almost anything! Do you mean biting as in Carcass distortion or biting as in blink 182? I'm nor familiar with the Zoom products (although I've used one once and it was very thin and brittle sounding)What kinda sound are you going for? Need more info...first one, are your pickups in your guitar humbuckers?

no i have single coils in my strat. the sound i'm looking for is a warm slightly overdriven sound (like on the strokes single 'sometimes' if you know it) then for solo's i want it to stand out, when i play solo's now the lead guitar seems to be weak.

Are they stock pickups? If so, you may want to consider replacing them with some hotter aftermarket pickups and play with which pickups give which sounds, many guitarists I know simply switch between pickups on the toggle when going from rhythm to leads...but then many of them also have hand chosen pickups in each position too...

Which reminds me, I gotta get some new pickups in my Washburn...at least the bridge one...

I would recomened a Dimarzio HS3. It's a stacked humbuker so it cancels out the hum and noise you get from a single coil and it's pretty hot as far as output. Also maybe get a EMG single coil, I have one in the neck position of my guitar and I love it! Also those rail pickups, I forget what they are called but they seems interesting. Now look what you've done, yhis is officially a rant.Hahaha

yeah i think i'll change the pickups cos they are stock - if anyone is selling second hand humbuckers at a bargain price and is willing to ship to Ireland let me know! i posted it in the classifieds

Some people for a biting lead sound that stands out use a wah-wah pedal (in addition to there distortion sound) and just have it pushed full and use that freq to boost the solo sound and it gives it a little bite as well. Make sure it's a good wah wah like a crybaby or a vox.

I personally use a DiMarzio Fast Track 2 for which fits in the single coil space and is in reality a humbucking pickup. It also feature coil tap wiring so it can be run as a humbucker, parallel, or single coil. They are the best for the money. Stay away from the EMG single as it is very hard to get much tone variation from it at all. Not saying it is junk or anything, just not very wide rangin pickup.

If I come accross any used DiMarzio's I will surely let ya know.

It is either clean or dirty depending on how much gain you set on your amp. I use it for both clean and crunch as well. Like I said, it too can be wired witha coil tap to run in either of the three set-ups I described above.

Did you send an email direct to one of the stores or what?

Also did you try a couple of times to validate your email? I know I have had that happen a couple of times to me and I just persistantly re-enter till it validates.

Musicians friend seems only friendly to it's american friends and counterparts. I'm in Canada and they won't send it here either so don't feel bad about them not sending to Ireland. Only in the U.S. they say in the shipping.
