Wowzers, what a film...

Last night my wife and I sat down and watched "Bowling for Columbine". While I like Michael Moore as a humorist, I do not like his politics, but had to see it.

I was very moved and quite impressed with his presentation of the subject matter(s) being quite fair and interesting and took a viewpoint from many sides of the subject matter. It hasn't necessarily changed my opinion on the subjects he covered, which strayed away from the gun controversy from time to time, but it is a very thought provoking documentary.

Not rrying to start any political battle here, just saying, if you have a couple hours to spend watching a movie, watch it, it's interesting and moving...IMHO.

Yeah, totally, not that I would ever buy my ammo at K-Mart anyway...and really, K-Mart will be gone in another couple years anyway, it's not like that change will save them, BUT that was a good thing for K-Mart to do, even tho they had no real choice considering...

its a great film, he got in some trouble though-u know that part were Charlton Heston holds up the gun and says from my cold dead hands? that happened 3 months before columbine.

still i reckon its not too long before his hands are cold.....

"From my Cold, Dead Hands" is a cliche' catch phrase used by the NRA and most any other pro-gun movement and has been for a long time...hell, I have a big ol' belt buckle with that statement on it that I got over 15 years ago.

I am pro gun, I have guns, I respect guns and people(which is the big difference between sportsmen and killers) and I am part of the NRA. But none the less, he presented some very interesting questions and some very interesting statistics.

What is the difference in America? Personally, I think the whole problem starts in the home. When my dad took me hunting and showed me how to handle a gun, it was with respect for the weapon, and even one mishandling was quickly followed with a stern lecture and demonstration. I remember it as a great bonding time between my father and I. I don't think you see that very often any more...at least not in urban America. I plan to teach my daughters the very same lessons.

In my opinion I do not think guns are needed, guns are for one thing and one thing only and we all know what that is.:)

Robbing liquor stores? That's what I use them for.

Seriously tho, I did get a kick out of that movie too. I"m pretty neutral about the gun thing...all I know is that I have no business owning one. I'd end up injuring myself or my dog before an intruder.

Well, whether guns are necessary or not, they ARE a fact of life. We don't need, nor should there be gun control, there should be PEOPLE control.

I have many guns, though only one is in my house now since I have two small children, the rest are at my dads in his gun safe until I get my own. And no, they are not for one thing. For me they are for two things, protecting my family and hunting for food...two totally legal uses of a weapon.

Guns, tho somewhat unfornate, ARE needed becasue there are a lot of wackos out there and it is my duty to protect my family, if I don't who will?

The end result of these two actions is what I'm talking about. It's about using guns to control violence is why I would never live in the States.I just find people are paranoid and it's gotten out of control and that's why you think you need guns. Guns were made for killing, and control nothing more. I admire you wanting to protect your family but if everyone else has this mentality I see why you do need guns. Don't take this as a personal attack (I've been getting this alot on the net)I just want to discuss it that's all.

If all you know is having guns and thinking having guns makes you safer then why are there so many people dying of gun violence? It's a lot easier when your peaved at someone to take your gun out and shoot them than to talk to them about it and that's what I see alot of the time. It's an eye for an eye mentality that I'm concerned about. It's about eduaction and educating individuals you don't need guns, but it's easier to walk away sometimes than to look it in the eye. This is a very heavy topic and I'm not going to change anyones opinion and I'm not really attempting to, just looking for discussion.:)

I am not talking about shooting at someone I don't like. That is a silly comparison. I am taking about shooting at someone that walks into my house in the middle of the night...I highly doubt you will walk away from something like that, you have no choice.

Of course something dies hunting, thats the whole point, if you wanna start discussing that from the animal rights vantage point we might just as well stop it here because we will NEVER agree. I am a carnivore and always will be. I find hunting fun, exhilarating and challenging...and mighty tasty too.

I would NEVER raise a gun to another human being unless that human being was threating my family. If he is threating my family, may God have mercy on his soul, cuz he'll be arriving shortly.

Where the education lacks is in anger management. I do agree, many people are FAR to quick to grab a gun, and THAT is scary...in the hands of the law abiding, peaceful citizenry of a nation guns are necessary.

Not everybosy who has a gun is quick to use it in anger, quite the opposite in fact, it's just the ones that are happen to be the ones that make the news, cuz that is the medias job, to sensationalize everything and keep the people scared.

aongodavo: totally divided topic. Some people like him some people hate 'em, some people don't care. Personally, I don't mind him, but if he decides to pick more fights I'm gonna start swaying in my opinion. He seems to be getting a little bit trigger happy.

No, no, not you, the whole rest of the thread is just leading to nowhere.

Bush is loved or hated just like anyone else...ask 100 people and you'll get 100 different answers.

DB, why do you get so bent outta shape? All I'm trying to do is get your and other peoples opinion on what you think. Since I don't live in the states I wanna know what people really think and how they feel about it. If you own rifles for hunting that's fine, even though I'm not for hunting I can understand why people do it, I'm talking about hand guns and freaking m-16's and uzi's. I live in Canada and there is alot of people here with guns, mostly rifles but more and more hand guns are coming across the border. Just last week in Edmonton there was a drive by shooting, quite the change from the norm....a drive by shouting!:P
I've shot guns in cadets and with my grandfather and I always had the feeling that it's too much power for a person to have, but again that's just me.Like I said before I want opinions on your stance and I'm not argueing here, you seem to think that I am ( or at least that's the way it seems).Debates and discussion lead to stimulation of the mind and I want to stimulate mine with discussion.

I'm not bent outa shape, this is just NOT the direction I wanted this conversation to go. Politics have successfully stayed out of the site for a while, and I knew I was taking a chance even mentioning the movie, bugt figured I would...I don't wanna know what anyone thinks, cuz I really don't care, I just liked the film and found it very interesting...

Dude, M16's and Uzi's are an entirely different matter. That is the problem. When I say "guns" I am talking about my .380 Taurus semi auto handgun and my 8mm German Mauser for deer hunting...my double barrel for vaiour other game....22's for small game. If, when I say "guns" you assume I am talking about assault weapons and other fully automatic killing machines then we are entirely missing each other. Guns like that have no place in my home and should have no place except military and police.

I don't need a fully automatic weapon...I have the Anarchists Cookbook LOL

Read this

www.homerecordingconnecti...d=3109&frm4

this was a thread all about people arguing their points of view about topics they are passionate about. It got real ugly. Somebody got booted for being a jerk. This and other forums along the same lines are probably why db didn't want this to turn into a political soapbox - let sleeping dogs lie. :)

I am not commenting on this forum, just offering some HRC history...

I know all about it getting ugly on messageboards and I try not to argue and if it does end up that way I don't perpetuate after the fact. I'm a peaceful person and I want to learn from other people. I'm not so ignorant as to argue over the internet it's senseless really but I do like a good hearted debate.

I own guns, several, but they're for target shooting, nothing more (no, not even for protection, what good is an unloaded weapon, locked in a cabinet with a trigger lock gonna do?). And nope, I don't lock my door.

Up here, if it comes to blows, we use our fists. (And our beer ;))

to me, the main theme of bowling for columbine wasn't about gun control. rather, it was about our culture of fear. it's about what happens to a society when we are selectively shown "news" that is ultimately aimed towards getting ratings, amongst other things.

as far as i'm concerned, keep your guns. removing the CHOICE to have a gun in your possession from an entire populace creates an enormous power vacuum. it's your choice to have a gun or not, boys and girls. there's no way i'm keeping any in my place, but i definitely see the value in some of you keeping them.

peace!
