since all my beats are programmed, i just had a brainwave. if i buy a cymbal, i can overlap some cymbal parts (which are the bits that you cant really recreate with a machine very well) with the programmed bits
im excited about this idea, cant wait til i get paid to go get set up with a cymbal, some sticks and brushes and a stand.

Feb 29, 2004 10:47 am yeah i know a guy who uses a set of v-drums with real cymbals, and it makes it sound confusingly lifelike, even though there isn't a whole lot of room to do stuff on the actual drums. i think it's just when you hear the same cymbal sample over and over, you can really tell that it doesn't have the variety of sonic character that real cymbals do...the variation of sound from one hit to the next. good luck with this.

Feb 29, 2004 02:01 pm Probably a good way to go flame. Cymbals are almost always the weakest part in programmed drums. Good cymbals are pretty pricey though :)

Feb 29, 2004 02:48 pm Sounds like a good idea Flame. That's always the part that sounds too synthetic to me.
Feb 29, 2004 02:57 pm right on. i've concidered this myself. i thought it might be good to get the whole hi-hat job for max versatility.

Feb 29, 2004 04:45 pm flame, I think that's a great idea. That's a good way to lively it up a bit.
I've started experimenting with incorporating electronic drums into my stuff. I'm sure it was at least in part inspired by your crafty use of the same. I'm trying to blend organic hand drums with techno-sounding percussion from my drum machine. I'll let you know how it turns out, I'm sure. :)

Mar 02, 2004 08:50 pm Man, I have spent all these years trying to get my synth and sampled drums to sound real and now you guys are gonna cheat. I am ashamed of myself. :-)

Mar 14, 2004 09:59 am I saw on the new norah jones album (although I haven't listened to it yet) that on one track a guy is playing a "box". I don't know if it's a cardboard box or not, but I have thought about using one for an acoustic track before. Cardboard boxes give some really bassy sound. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there in case you don't like the sound of your synth kick drum.

Mar 14, 2004 12:24 pm I could sample all of my real cymbols and post them for you Flame. There are 2 16" Zildjians Crashes, 1 20" Zildjian Ride, 1 18" Zildjian China Boy HIgh, 1 6.5" Zilbel, 14" Zildjian Hi-Hats and 1 10" Wuhan Splah. I also have a Cow Bell and a tambourine type thing on my set. Let me know and I'll make it happen.
This should save you alot of money.

Mar 15, 2004 01:36 am When I was in Peru, there was a drum circle playing, and this one guy was playing a wooden box that you sit on, and then slap at between you legs. It was hollow, but had a circle hole cut in it. It made some cool sounds. I got a chance to mess with a similar one once, and they're pretty fun. Oh, and I would love a cow bell of my very own, and maybe a set of timbales.

Mar 16, 2004 10:59 pm Another thing to do to make drum programs sound more eal is to vary the tempo slighty, like move it around a few beats per minute. It just sounds more human.
