sample rate

so i just bought this ART dpsII tube pre with s/pdif out-to hook into my aardvark q10 pro. and i started wondering about the whole sample rate thing. what should my settings be? im using sonar 3 and i believe ive always been at 41.1 but im guessing ive been a *******? is 96khz safe? what about this whole 24 bit thing? whats the best quality. not strong in this field. thanks for your time.

I would say either record in 44.1 at 24-bit or 44.1 at 16-bit. I record at 24-bit, but I used to do 16-bit since then you don't have to worry about dithering. To most people it's not possible to tell the difference. I don't think there's any reason to record at a higher sample rate than CD quality, but bit depth is a little different since it can be dithered to preserve quality and it also allows more room for audio degradation when processing effects and stuff. I believe there was just very recently a thread with the exact same title where this was discussed, actually-- so you should probably check that out.
