Methods of recording live drums

Hi all. I am looking to record some live drums pretty soon and would like opinions on what equipment I will need in order to do that. I plan to rent some mics from a local music store, because I don't think I will do this all that often and don't care to buy a ton of mics. What are your thoughts on micing configurations? Do I need one mic for each drum, or can I do two toms with one mic? I want to mount the mics real close to the drum heads, right? About 1" or so?

Also, what route should I go to record all of the mics at once? I would just as soon have them on one track...so could I just plug all the mics into a mixer and then use a single output from the mixer into my sound card? Or is it inherently better to have a sound card that will accept multiple inputs?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

How big of a kit are we talking about here?

I would say to check out some of our miking tips, there are a couple about drums www.dbmasters.net/hrc/new...at&cat_id=1 one mic for each drum could be best, but hardly necessary.

Don't mix them down to one track, use at least two so they can retain some what of a stereo image.

The kit is one bass drum, snare, hi hat, ride cymbal, and 4 toms. Only one or two crash cymbals.

So if I want to use two tracks, and want to record all at once...I need a sound card that can accept multiple inputs, right? I still haven't made the purchase of a recording-quality sound card...still using the SB Live Value. What if I just add some panning effects to the one track? Will that come anywhere close to sounding as good as two separate tracks?

So how many mics do I need? I've got a hi-hat, ride cymbal, snare, kick drum, 4 toms, 2 crash cymbals.

I would lay pretty good odds you could do it with 4, one in the kick, one stuffed in the left side of the kit, one on the right and one over the snare.
