Hard to believe that 40 years has passed. The question I ask all of you:

Are The Beatles still as influential today?

Do you think it could ever happen again?

I was listening to a bit on NPR on the way to work last week. It was about the arrival of the Beatles to the US and all of the hysteria that ensued. At some point, they mentioned a radio persona named Murray the K, and I thought to myself "Isn't there someone at HRC with that name?". I was curious: who is/was Murray the K?

I do think that they are still very influential. I've never been into them (I don't even own any beatles!), but I think that they were such a huge influence on an entire generation of songwriters that just about everybody is influenced by them at least indirectly. I probably couldn't name a single one of my influences that wasn't in turn influenced by the Beatles (Just a guess...I have no way of knowing that for sure!).

As far as it happening again...I dunno. It'd have to be one helluva band in order to capture the imagination and attention of the world like they did. They revolutionized songwriting and production. Anymore, it seems that everybody is revolutionizing songwriting and production every month :)

Well... They aren't quite as influential today, being half-dead and broken up for years. Do teens still go nuts when they hear the Beatles on the radio? Well, not the ones I know... But yes, they are still influential. The impact they had on the generation before us influenced rock music forever, and the trickle-down effect that their music has had will always be with us. We (at least I) can't really see how they directly influence anything now, but the generation who grew up with the Beatles had its share of songwriters, and it's THEIR influence, influenced by the Beatles, that we're most likely to see. Studying the Beatles music to compare to pop music today is like studying African tribal music to compare to BB King... it's not really a direct cause/effect relationship, but the chain of influences is definitely strong and direct.

As influencial as Their hey day? Probably not, Still influencing music and artist's, absolutely. In fact I'm rather amazed at how many artist's still cite them as an influence, especially young indie artists. But then again where better to dig for something "new" than in something "old". Put the right twist on it, and you never know. :)

I think going by previous "trends" and patterns in music history, we are due for a major musical revolution within the next 3 years. The beginning of this millenium is eerily similar to the early sixties, which was dominated by girl groups, young male singers and no real big star(Elvis was in the army). Unfortunatly though, I think there are some barriers today that didnt exsist or were not as predominant then, such as how quick the media is to hype and then drop its artists, how a new big thing or production discovery is introduced every month (as pointed out by Tadpui), and how almost every modern artist lacks the genuine qualities of wit, humor, imagination, and honesty. Artists today are forced to abide by the general rules of the media, and to reverberate its "black" humor. Sounds pretty bad in all, but there is still hope.

Yet another thread boils down to "the man keeping us down" and "it's all the labels fault"...argh, it just drives me nuts. If you are good and original you HAVE a chance in the right time at the right place.

It's only an opinion, and the truth.

yeah, yeah, yeah...it's the man holding us down...I know.

Seriously tho, I respect the opinion, I really do, I just think it is getting to the point of being overused and becoming an excuse to not try for many people. Many times new styles, music revolutions or the "new hip trend" is started by somebody totally outside the norm does make it on their own merit or by their own hard work and thereby redefining what "the norm" is. So, no, I don't believe it's the whole truth, but I do belive you have every right to believe it and say it.
